What we learn from Priyadarshini's case

Justice delayed is NOT justice denied. The adage phrase that goes is denied with people power. In fact Priyadarshini's case brings a ray of hope for all of us. We evidence these incidents of injustice at all places...at home, office, while travelling through public transport, college, university.

This incident began too in the college where Santosh Kumar Singh used to stalk and harass Priyadarshini Mattoo at Delhi University in 1996. This is as minor an incident as we evidence at all public places whether school, college, university, parks. Here this minor incident that recurred for two years, ended in Priyadarshini's brutal killing by Santosh Kumar Singh.

Just as this is a joyful moment that a culprit is caught and will get his fateful punishment (on 30th October), it is also time to analyze what more can be learnt from this incident.

The harassment of Priyadarshini by Singh began in 1994. Eve-teasing on women's part though very common is not casual. At its incipient stage, itself women and girls can use common communication skills and postures that stop these incedents right there. There are common animal instincts that one knows are turning face, turning your body away from the other one or a forced inattentive attitude. This what commonly women take up to defend themselves. A stronger postion could however be, maintaining an eyecontact, silent but tough stand there and defeating the other person's purpose then and there. On practice one comes to know how body language speaks faster and stronger than words.

These incidents if still arise from the same person they must taken seriously by both parents and the girl. Informing police lodging an FIR if not beneficial at the moment definitely serve a good evidence for the case , as in Priyadarshini's case too FIR lodged by her in 1995 supported her case. An avoidence of situation never solves it but makes the opponent stronger.

Just as used later through campaigning in Priyadarshini's case, the people power could have been used before Priyadarshini's brutal murder happened . We can ask for support. Yesterday on Television Anupam Kher's view was asked and also why he supported campaign for Priyadarshini's case. He said that her father's determination to get his daughter justice moved him to support this campaign. We know we are Indians no matter how much the Western culture enters our country, we can still feel how it feels to see your child in trouble. Its only a voice of courage and determination we need to call people to help support the right cause because this situtation could equally be there's as today it is our's.

Love for justice hasn't died as yet. So arise take a review of similar situation nearby and solve it now. It is also a hope for similar pending cases that can be strengthened by taking support from CBI, media and our people.

We learn from this incident despite perverse judgment given by trial court Judge G.P. Thareja Justice Bhasin and Justice Sodhi finally gave the judgment pending for long. The incident is not only a victory of right over wrong it is better accepted if something is learnt from it. It has been unfortunate justice came so late. We can make it faster if we teach our daughters, sisters how to hold the stronger position by changing their body language, how to ask public to support them, knowing basics of law and knowing that there is nobody who can defeat women! There assets- patience, bearance, sight, intution, power to pray are the ones that win in the long run.
