If you want to buy a mid-size scanner for SOHO purposes, go for Taiwanese Acer.
While upgrading my computer recently, I decided to check out the deals online. Now that I am in India and we have many auctions here at baazee.com for computer accessories. Got(won at baazee.com) this scanner at 2950/- which is quite economical for a 48-bit scanner.
However, its quite slow. Moreover, I have attached it in series with a 100Meg Zip Drive preceding it which makes it all the more slow. It has a fast Preview but a very Slow(zzz.) scan cycle. The software supplied with it is MiraScan which works fine but takes 10-15 seconds sometimes in detecting it. Calibrates quickly.
Mirascan doesn't work very well with any TDH Imaging software. So use only popular imaging packages like Photoshop etc. Screen Freezes when it is scanning. This doesn't happen with Umax.
Otherwise it doesn't give any other problems. There is absoloutely no Light loss while scanning. The lid is pretty secure. The Power switch is abruptly located in the deep down right side. So if you are having a cabinet, you have to crawl your face inside and stretch your arm initially and then habit takes over.
