What you should know before buying a PC
Aug 19, 2007 04:37 PM 5751 Views

Computers are something which everyone needs in today’s time. You cant think of a business or an occupation which doesn’t have a computer application. The use of computers have gradually tricked down to homes, where most computer savvy kids are demanding home computers / PC / laptops for use at home. Now, if the parents are like me(that is not so computer savvy), they might be tricked into buying something which is unnecessarily elaborate, expensive and useless. Here are some useful tips.

CONFIGURATION – This word is used for the parts and specifications which make a computer system.

The main parts of a PC are –

CPU – Vertical box which houses the chips and wires etc. Keyboard Mouse Monitor – the screen Speakers

You must know about the following terms before you venture to buy a PC

PROCESSOR – This is the mind of the computer and decides the IQ of your PC. All processors from Celeron to Pentium 4 to Athlon to Core 2 Duo are smart enough. For absolutely household purposes, Pentium 4 should be adequate.

RAM – Random Access Memory – this decides how fast your computer shall work. For domestic purposes, 512 MB(megabytes) of RAM are enough.

MEMORY – Unless you really want to store long movies on your computer, 60 to 80 GB(gigabytes) are enough.

OPERATING SYSTEM – this is the ‘slate’ on which you ‘scribble’ so to say. Windows Xp should be enough. Don’t go for Windows Vista just yet, moreover to run vista at least 1 GB of RAM are needed.

DVD drive – get one which can read and write DVDs.

Floppy drive – avoid this gadget…it is practically obsolete.

MODEM – If you are going to subscribe BSNL / MTNL broadband, they would supply a modem so don’t buy now.

MONITOR – You can opt for a conventional 17 inch monitor or a more expensive flat screen monitor depending on your budget.

Keyboard, Mouse – available in conventional and wireless models

Speakers – conventional ones are quite cheap. For 500 rupees you should get a pair of nice speakers Headphones, microphone is optional

Price – The good quality assembled PC come for about 20 – 25000 rupees. Branded PC come about 7-10000 rupees costlier.

Hope you find the tips useful.
