I like the way that Mercedes Lackey writes and I have read just about everything that she has written. I thought Burning Water flowed pretty well. There weren't a lot of places where I was tempted to skip over weighty description. First of all, this is one of three Mercedes Lackey books, which focus on Investigations by the heroine, Diana Tregarde. I don't have a problem with stories about evil versus good, as a matter of fact, I really enjoy a lot of books along that line.

This book is certainly about good overcoming evil. However, I thought it was rather barbaric. I do understand that the subject matter which is Aztec in historical nature, in and of itself, like lots of history is graphically cruel. This is one aspect that I would have preferred a little less reality in. There were some aspects of the evil type murders and how they were handled by the book that were certainly vicious in nature. I don't know why Mercedes Lackey who usually has a very upbeat style, would delve into such uncivilized tradition as the main center of her book.

There were some parts of the book that were clearly obvious that I kind of began to wonder why the characters didn't catch on. Two other titles that are Diana Tregarde investigations are Children of the Night and Jinx High. Of these, Children of the Night, I enjoyed thoroughly, and it also dealt with kind of an evil versus good scenario. The vampire references make it more fantasy that the historical tradition represented in Burning Water. I have yet to read Jinx High.
