We do a great deal of traveling around the US, by a Van. It’s not your everyday “Plain Jane Van,” but rather a very nicely appointed Conversion Van. I’ll reserve all of the features and amenities for another review, because this one I’m focusing on is Burger King.

Traveling by highways and byways results in one major culinary disaster, the “fast food” restaurants. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not against fast food restaurants, it’s actually the caloric value of each little tender morsel of food that has me worried. Actually, I enjoy many products from various establishments specializing in burgers, greasy fries, egg this, egg that and some forms of chicken looking, but not tasting like chicken, meals. The restaurant we decide upon more than any other would be Burger King. We actually enjoy the flame broiled flavor over any other of the grilled, finely chopped version of what is a very sad substitute for beef. Furthermore, Burger King has improved the taste on their French Fries to the point of almost tasting better than McDonald’s. Wow, what a statement!

Here in the US on most of the Interstate Highways and within the proximity of most major cities and towns, most exits have Burger King, McDonald’s, Arby’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the list goes on. Whatever you are looking for to satisfy that craving for your ultimate high caloric dinning pleasure, is available from one turnoff to the next. Depending upon what area of the country you are in, there are many other regional choices, as well.

So, getting back to Burger King. On our last trip, while returning home from a very pleasant and peaceful Thanksgiving Holiday, with close friends in Illinois, we made a dinner stop in Elkhart, Indiana, to satisfy our burning hunger for the flame broiled “Whopper.” My wife and I, our son and his wife, plus our two dogs needed some nutrition and refreshments for the next leg of our long drive home.

At this particular Burger King, a new burger with cheddar cheese, bacon and a thicker style burger was being promoted. Hey, being the wild and crazy sort of person I am, why not try this new burger? The pictures on the promotion signs above the menu list made this burger look so delicious, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into this big, juicy, exceptionally greasy looking, flame broiled chopped steak. My wife and I chose the same meals, while my son and his wife, stuck to the good old standard. the “Whopper.”

Once we had our meals, checked to make sure the items we ordered were correct, because you don’t want to be 5 miles down the road and have to turn back, if the meals have been wrongly prepared. By the way, we have learned the hard way to check our order, in the restaurant parking lot before we hit the highway, again. So, here we are pulling through the return tollbooths to get back on the Indiana Toll Way, when I take my first bite of the new promotional, highly advertised, only at that particular Burger King, bacon, cheddar and thicker burger. Wow, it tasted pretty dry and seemed a little overcooked. I decided, being a thicker burger, the cooking process must be longer to make sure there is no chance of an e-coli breakout. We’ve had them here in the USA before, so every burger gets cooked beyond belief. This must account for the well done dryness associated to my burger. Logical, right? Well, let me tell you, it was not right! As I began to devour this burger another sensation in my mouth began to arise, and it tasted crunchy. Upon further inspection, it felt like chopped bones. Yuck! That was it! No more, promotional burger for me. This burger was not fit for human consumption. I immediately began to gag and with that my wife asks, what’s the matter? I explain, and we both drop our burgers into the bag they came in.

It’s needless to say, by now we are traveling at 70 mph on an open toll road, with another exit nowhere in sight. All we could do was finish gagging, eat the remaining fries we had and got a big, “I told you so,” from my son and his wife. Both of them were very content with their choice of the good old standard whopper. I believe, I even heard our dogs snickering.

Would I ever recommend a Burger King, again? Why sure! I would never ever order their promotional cheddar cheese, bacon and thicker burger again, but I would stick with their old standards. In addition, this was about the only time while ordering from a Burger King, that we really disliked their food products. For those of you who are interested in the price of this promotional meal, it was some where around $4 US. I’m not too sure, because I really didn’t pay that much attention to the cost, but I will remember the taste. Yuck!
