Now these thinks are applicable to novice as well as pros.
#1) You should have a good knowledge of HTML.The use of Frontpage, Dreamweaver n others only help when you know at least BASIC HTML tags.
#2) Before creating a website / homepage, first make a clear vision of you target users. You should know if you are targeting youth, aged, males, female(majority)
#3) According to you target users, choose the colours, pictures and matter of the site. for instance, if the site targets females most, then light background like flowers will do wonders.
#4 Never ever use light colored fonts n a dark background wallpaper. why? Imagine this. the internet speed of your user is not too high, so till all the background image is loaded, the user will not be able to read anything.(‘Coz DEFAULT BACKGROUND COLOR IS WHITE)
#5 Today People are looking for more dynamic and more attractive sites. So if you can use Java Scripts or Flash, then it will a great bonus for your site.
#6 Make sure you update your site quite frequently. This will keep the interest of your user/clients in the site. After all who wants to see the same stuff over n over again.
#7 If your site deals in Downloading stuff, try to avoid use of FRAMES, due to some obvious reasons.
#8 Try to add some background music too. But Here you need to be careful that it should not be too loud or too heavy( in size). One more thing if you can add an option to disable the music too(Can make use of flash here).
#9 Take feedback from the users/clients and do what ever you can, according to their suggestions or comments. But don't forget to thank then n tell them that their suggestion is being implemented.
#10 You can never sit-back n relax after you have a site.You need to keep you self updated bout the new technologies n software to make the site more attractive n presentable.
