I built my first website at Bizland.com. They offered a free service, this is why I chose them. I tought myself basic html and built a functional, but not visually pleasing site. I stayed with them for almost a year. Then, out of nowhere, they announced that the service would no longer be free. The fee that they wanted to charge me was small, but I wasn't making much money from my site. So, I began searching for a new home for my site.
I ended up moving my site to About.com. I'm so happy I did. They are 100% free. You can build your site using html or you can use their site builder. I prefer the site builder. It's easy to use and made my site a little easier on the eyes. I highly recommend About.com for building a website.
