Brokeback Mountain - is about the relationship between two cowboys who first meet while herding sheep on a mountain of the same name. They spend weeks together in a harsh terrain and are drawn to each other out of need.

When they are called off the mountain, they part ways, not knowing when next they will meet. Unknowingly they have fallen in love with each other. Ennis goes on to marry his sweetheart, has two daughters, and with his wife struggles to make ends meet. Jack, the apparently more affected of the two, hangs around trying to find odd jobs and then takes up his interest- bull-riding at the rodeo. Here, he meets and marries the adventurous daughter of a rich man, and goes on to have a son.

Four years later, Ennis gets a postcard from Jack and they meet - That is when Ennis's wife Lorraine realises her husband's obvious preference . Jack is more open about his need with Ennis and is ready to throw away his seemingly prefect marriage and settle down with Ennis in some ranch. For Ennis however, things are a little more complex. When he was 9 years old,  his father had taken his brother and him to look at the disfigured body of a man killed by neighbours, because he was living with another man. Perhaps Ennis is unable to get past that trauma and therefore unable to make the kind of commitment that Jack wants.

Years pass and both men are stuck in their loveless and deteriorating sham marriages. Twice or thrice every year, they meet furtively (under the guise of fishing trips) on their beloved mountain and fulfill their longing for each other.

What happens in the end, is best left to be seen. The scenery is rugged and stark in its beauty, the pace is slow and the story will interest you, only if you empathise or allow yourself to get caught up in their turmoil and want to know what happens next.

See this movie only if you are not judgemental about same sex relationships, because there is in-you-face physical demonstration of their love, which might put off some. The director and the two lead actors are very courageous indeed, to have made this film. Perhaps it will go down in cinema history as a film that sympathetically shows the trauma and  pain that people in same-sex relationships face.
