''Bridget Jones's Diary” tells the story of a 32 year-old singleton (That's a word we've learned from the movie.) that makes a valiant vow to get out of single hood and find the perfect man. And to accompany her in her journey is a diary that she begins to write to record her triumphs and failures. Bridget Jones (RENEE ZELLWEGER) works at London publishing house. She is determined to improve her life by losing weight, cutting down on cigarettes and booze, and finding a man. While the first two are up to just her, the latter obviously requires a willing man.
Among her immediate choices is Mark Darcy (COLIN FIRTH), a divorced barrister who she has known but not particularly liked since they were kids. Then there is Daniel Cleaver (HUGH GRANT), a terribly charming and handsome chap who is her boss. Bridget's happiness ends, however, when she discovers Daniel with another woman. From that point on, and with the help of her friends, Bridget decides to follow through on her resolutions that ultimately include choosing between Daniel and Darcy as her lover. After a bout of flirting, she chooses Daniel - and they begin a passionate affair. Yet, when one part of her life goes well, the other inevitably falls apart as she discovers that her parents (JIM BROADBENT and GEMMA JONES) are separating, with her mother beginning a relationship with her boss, a TV shopping channel host. She has a passionate affair with Daniel but then one discovers that he is also sleeping with another woman. Heartbroken she starts leaning towards Darcy. It is a comedy that uses intelligence and wit to make the audience laugh. All who have ever gone in search of Mr. Right or Ms Right can surely relate to Bridget Jones's adventures and misadventures.
The viewers laugh at what they see onscreen. Yes,They laugh at Bridget Jones. But deep inside, they are laughing at themselves, perhaps remembering what it was like to be in her shoes. There are also those who are in Bridget's position: lonely, jaded, and even desperate. And to be able to laugh at the scenes unfolding before them just may be the relief they need. ''Bridget Jones's Diary'' will guarantee you a good laugh. With a great cast, a fluid script, and infectious dialogue, it really is good entertainment.
