So this is my review on the movie ’Bride & Prejudice.’ No, I watched ’Balle Balle...’ or something like that, didn’t I? Confusing, confusing. Oh, yes, it was Balle Balle

Amritsar to L.A.. I remember it well...

------

Lalita Bakshi...Aishwarya Rai

Jaya Bakshi...Namrata Shirodkar

Maya Bakshi...Meghna Kothari

Lucky Bakshi...Peeya Rai Chaudhary

William Darcy...Martin Henderson

Mr. Bakshi...Anupam Kher

Mrs. Bakshi...Nadira Babbar

Director...Gurinder Chadha

Zoom in, Amritsar. Lalita Bakshi lives with her sisters, Jaya, Maya, Lucky, and her parents. At a party, Lalita meets Will Darcy. He cracks a few jokes, and Lalita turns up her snooty nose as she proclaims that in India ’When you sneeze, it means somebody’s remembering you,’. Will Darcy wants to punch her smug face in but keeps quiet.

The chubby mother decides to send two of the sisters on a trip to Goa (Another Go Goa! advertisement) and Jaya and Lalita go there with some weird Balraj and his snobby sister, as well as Darcy. There they meet some guy who tries to poison Lalita against Darcy. At this point of time, the movie was becoming less and less like a crossover film and more like a daily soap.

After gaping at Ashanti’s song’n’dance, they come back home. Balraj, Darcy and his sister disappear someplace - thankfully. But then Wickham the poison-arrow comes to ’Laleeeta’s house, where there is also another resident - Kholi. He eats like he hasn’t eaten for a month, talks with his mouth full, and looks like he’s just come here to buy a wife. He’s smitten for Lalita. They all sit down to watch Maya do her snake dance, which is the only part she gets in the movie. ’Momji’ applauds, but an encore is politely refused. OK, small trying-to-be-funny things - more soapy stuff.

Lalita rejects Kholi, and he klutzily walks away, and then marries Lalita’s best friend. Lalita is too busy dreaming about Wickham. They all go along to England, and then Lucky goes off to places with Wickham. They all run off to L.A., after some fussing about First-Class and Second. After a wedding reception of Kholi’s, they go back to England for another stopover. There they rescue Lucky from Wickham’s clutches, and after some more tiffs, everything is hunky-dory and everyone lives happily ever after.

Aishwarya Rai is just fine as Lalita. Her acting is good, but not up to the usual standard. Martin Henderson acts well. Anupam Kher is calm and cool, but Nadira Babbar has a tendency to over-act. The sisters are fine in the minuscule roles given to them. Nitin Ganatra, surprisingly, is good in his role.

The soundtrack is just fine, but not exactly what you’d expect from a musical. Balle Balle... is ... well, strange. Tumse Kahen Ya Na Kahen appears over and over again in the movie, until you are almost as tired of it as I was of Ajeeb Dastaan sung over and over in Kasautii.... Payal Bajake is good, but not too catchy. I have no idea why No Life Without Wife and Main Chahoon Pati (or something like that) were put in.

The movie just keeps going on and on, and it thoroughly reminded me of the plot twists of K. People who like Hollywood movies will find it boring. Indian audiences will see it as an old storyline remixed. And crossover film fans... might even hate it. Maybe the people who liked it, if they read Pride and Prejudice, they might change their minds.

Overall, it’s just OK for time-pass.
