I had high hopes for this movie, even though ''Pride and Prejudice'' was not a favorite read of mine. At the beginning I felt interested to see how the character played by Aishwarya Rai would develop throughout the movie. I was encouraged by her cold interactions with the hotellier from L.A. In my opinion, she plays strong female roles very convincingly and dynamically when they are written well (I'm thinking of ''Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'') so I was excited to see that her character was up to the challenge.
All that changed and I'm not sure why. To me the reconciliation and ''love'' between her character and the hotellier was unbelievable and didn't match with the character we had seen throughout the film until that point. That's why I said it was (hi)jacked...I'm not sure what weirdness hijacked Aish's character, but in my opinion it made the movie jacked. I was hoping there were no Asiaphiles in the theatre with me because it seemed all too convenient to their fantasy of the pliable Indian girl just waiting to be swept off her feet. Yuck. It might be harsh, but unfortunately it's not unfounded to worry that this movie will strengthen certain (perhaps particularly white) guys' ignorance and arrogance towards South Asian women.
