Unprecedented hype, Pulsating songs, catchy lyrics, trendy promos, adding to this list are a mega successful director and equally successful producer with a terrific technical crew. Will Shankar deliver a hit? Will A.M.Rathnam give us another super hit. Does Boys live up to the hype created by the media? To know the answers just read on this review, but before doing that here are a few things 2 keep in mind...

Shankar has a uncanny habit of doing a masala entertainer after a solid film. Think about Gentleman and Kaadhalan, Indian and Jeans and now Mudalvan and Boys. You must think like a teenager for this film and not a middle aged critic. After Kaadhalan, Shankar has experimented with new comers. So Boys is a masala entertainer that carries a better message than Jeans or Kaadhalan.

Now let's move to the storyline. Boys are Munna, Juju, Bob Galy, Kumar and Krishna. They are in sync with the X generation. Trendy clothes, Take it easy attitude and loads of cheeky stuff. They meet Harini and all 5 woe her but finally Munna gets her after doing some stupid stuff in a busy road. Parents for a change discuss the problem in a room and it's nice to hear about their past, but they make sure Harini and Munna stay apart. As you very well know it's better to let loose the lovers than hold them tight and with a sweet twist in the screenplay thanks to the earthquake that shook Chennai recently, the lovers elope to Tripathi and get married thanks to Mangalam Sir. By the way Vivek is Mangalam Sir and for a change he is blended with the script. In between all these we have 3 songs which will be dealt later in the review.

Move over to second half, lovers threatened and friends too get expelled from their respective homes for this act of love and marriage. After this there is no looking back for the screenplay, it takes off with some stunning dialogues and sharp direction with some superb cameo roles by Senthil and finally by Solomon Paapaiya. The Boys along with Mrs. Harini Munna come up in life thanks to the support of Mangalam Sir, but reality keeps hitting them at regular intervals and they face a lot of hardships before tasting success. But the man behind the idea of forming the band Boys, dies in a mishap and we get to see a twist thanks to some mischief done by the Boys in the first half. In the end the lovers or should we say the couple cuz they are married, unite much to the joy of everyone including us. The Boys with Harini have worked really hard in the movie and it shows in the screen. Again we have 3 songs and we will deal with them now.

First song is Girlfriend and there is a talk that the animated girl is not so aha aha oh oh.. that's due to the fact that the animation has seamlessly integrated itself with the scenes and all you can see is another character there rather than a cartoon. The song is great. Dating song could have been shot in a more grand manner but the camera and beach resort are good. Ale Ale stays in the eyes for quiet a while thanks to the brilliant and terrific Time Slice photography. The photography and execution is top notch. Boom Boom is 2 cool in terms of sets and graphics but costumes could have been better even though they are good. Maro Maro is good too but no where near Secret of Success, it blows away all other songs in terms of choreography, lighting, music etc.

All right here comes the review about the technical stuff. Graphics are so good that they stick with the scenes easily. Ravi K Chandran excels with his camera, so is V.T. Vijayan with his editing. Raju Sundaram has done a decent job with his choreography while Sujatha is sharp as ever with his dialogues. A.R.Rahman electrifies the audience with the songs and is a bit quiet when compared to the background score. Sabu Cyril leads to the pack among technicians thanks to his brilliant sets.

Shankar has done it again with a cool, intelligent, realistic, youthful and fast screenplay with some super touches at regular intervals. All the actors have done their role very well including the actors in cameos. Full marks to Shankar again. Slapstick comedy by Vivek has worked wonders in screen. Movie could have been helped more by better censoring but still nothing is 2 vulgar, cuz Shankar has done it before. Remember some scenes from his earlier movies, one in Gentleman, many in Kaadhalan and some in Indian. So nothing much to croon about the vulgarity but what about the lavish budget. We don't think so it would have cost some where around 20 crores for this movie!!! Anyway it's left to A.M.Rathnam to worry about the budget! The movie is already a Super Hit in Telugu and said to be doing business for 15 crores!

APPLAUSE : The Boys (the Girl too!), Dialogues, Screenplay and Technicians

AHEM! : Too much exposure in the start...!

VERDICT : Definitetly a Musical and Technical Extravaganza from Shankar and his crew.

UTHHEAVEN SCENE OF THE MOVIE : Lots of scenes but Sa Re Ge Ma song ending.. it makes you shed a tear or two.
