This is only the fourth Tamil movie I have watched after coming to chennai. The rest of them, Alai Payudhe, Minnale, 12B had left me with a good impression of Tamil movies.

It is very tempting for me to go into bashing up the movie. But the others have done a great job of it already. I concur with them.

This movie, about a bunch of brats who grow up (and how!) is far removed from reality. The director leaves the younger generation utterly confused at the end. The story itself is threadbare. Five boys in the beginning of their youth entice five girls. One girl, and according to me the dumbest of the lot, actually gets married to the equally dumb unemployed hero amidst the cheering of friends(?!!-who were wise enough to let love be) and a godfather (I will not forgive vivek for this role) they could have done without.

They go through much difficulty (putting the best of tragedies to shame!) but the ways in which their miseries are shown evoke more nausea than sympathy. Does one have to show people squatting in open toilets or cleaning themselves up after a session? Or puke with much ado in front of the camera? I thought Tamil movies had grown up from the age of comedians puking and entering the loo to evoke a laugh.

After unnecessarily sacrificing one of the main leads and a prolonged cremation sequence, the director finally puts an end to our woes by turning the wannabes into pop stars.

The director sends all the wrong signals to generationnext.

  1. You can fall in love and then quit college provided you have it in you to become a pop star!

  2. Girls are essential. As pure sex commodiities. As long as they do not belong to your family, it is ok to do whatever you please with them in public.

  3. Drinking is ok. But not so much that you get into trouble.

  4. Friendship between boys and girls is a hahahha!

The only saving grace of this movie is the music. Ok, I differ from the others. I loved most of the songs in the movie although the climax song seemed inspired from the hindi movie Karz.

What disturbed me most was that there were several people in the theatre who seemed to be having a whale of a time, enjoying the portrayal of women in the movie. Well, as long as the director did not show the women in their family....

The movie could have shaped out very well. The director unfortunately, loses control and like all vehicles gone astray, the movie will cause more damage in attempting to carry a message than deliver it home.

Mr Shankar, the next time you attempt such a venture, do take the advice of your elders too. It will benefit all of us.
