It was always my dream to own a Bose music system. For almost a year now I was trying to get my hands on the lifestyle 48. I had been to their outlet in Bangalore on Church street. After reading a few articles describing technical specs of a full driver speaker and the difference between bose the so called tower speakers and considering what else you could buy for that money( 2, 58, 638) I left it at that. A few weeks back I was on brigade road looking around in the computer shops. Out of curiosity I stepped into the bose store. On seeing the demo of the three computer speakers I choose the Companion 3 Series II Multimedia Speaker System. let me explain the reason why not the other two. The basic one Companion™ 2 Series II Multimedia Speaker System did not sound that great. The third one Companion 5 Multimedia Speaker System had a kind of a surround effect which was not too good for regular music listening. It creates a kind off theater effect which is great but only for games and watching movies. I don't know how many of you would agree with me, surround effect makes music sound kind off unnatural.
Coming to the performance part of it. The installation was quiet easy. It was out of the box and playing in less than five minutes. Bose uses their proprietary names such as **Acoustimass module
for a subwofer and **True space stereo signal processing circuitry for a clear even distribution of sound. They all mean serious business. The subwofer performs too good for its size and the speakers no bigger a palm size can be heard two floors below. They may not be the bose high end neodymium magnet but with the right sound card and dfx plugin the performance is nothing short of excellent. Bose never specifies output of their speakers in terms of Rms or pmpo, but believe me the max volume is sufficient for a 1000 square feet hall. Even at max volume the sound is totally undistorted. You got to hear this to believe it.
The control pod has two jacks, audio in for an I pod and audio out for headphones. The volume can be conveniently controlled with it and it has a feather touch power on/off.
Coming back to the comparison of series 3 and 5 speakers. What if I want to listen to music and watch music as well. Well there is no need to buy both of them. The money saved from buying the 3 series( 24638 - 16763)thats rs 7875 can be put into a creative sound card called Sound blaster XFI Elite Pro. Apparently this sound card has three options of a audio creation mode for sound recording, gaming mode and entertainment mode for music. In each of these modes we can customize the surround effect. Did I mention its George Lucus Thx certified. This means thundering rainfalls sounds like its really really raining outside and glass breaking scenes would send mom yelling.
I did hear bose is launching new computer speakers called music monitor. This one has the bose much talked about neodymium magnet which creates an amazing fidelity. This set apparently does not have a bass module. Bose claims that its tiny speakers create the effect of the companion 5. Great to carry around with you laptop.
All in all a great product from bose which comes at a price. If you want to spend that much on a set of speakers believe me you wont ever regret it.
May I add here that audio enhancements take it a generation ahead. Try the fxsound.com for an extra crisp sound. farook
