Whenever you select any seat on BMS & proceed to payment, these seats get locked in the system for a period 15 mins, this period is present, so that the user can fill in the required details, choose from the various payment modes, offers etc available & complete the payment, after which the seats are deemed sold.
The lock is important as it helps prevent issues like double bookings for the same seat, user getting the seat which he has selected & many such reasons.
This is one of basic principals of db locks, which is applied in almost all ticketing solutions hence weather it's PVR, Paytm or BMS the answer remains pretty much the same.
