That's the essence of latest bollywood film BLUFFMASTER.....Director Rohan Sippy returns with his second outing and he has done it this time!
plot
Abhishek Bachchan is young ,smart , and professional conman on the run to make money.He is nothing but a sort of king in this field!He lives by the formula-Sabse Bada Rupiyaa!
Story takes a turn when he mets his ladylove Priyanka .Priyanka is honest, sincere, dignified, simple girl which is definitely far cry for our hero Abhishek!Obviously Priyanks does not know anything about the true face of him!However ,their relationship reaches upto the zenith of engagement..But in that very night ,true idenity of Abhishek comes to the fore. Pulling the wool over his girlfriend eyes proves difficult for Abhisekh as he is caught in the act of conning her[Priyanka] own family in that night!!
Priyanka world comes crashing down when she realises her beau has been earning big bucks by cheating on people. Unable to forgive him, she walks out of the relationship.
Abhishek has acutally a support of Boman Irani who is a doctor .Actual drama takes place when Abhishek, who was so far confided in Boman, now meets Riteish.A small-time con Riteish's only focus in life is to fool people. He’s chirpy, opinionated, vulnerable, and yet persistent. .Both hit big time and are more of a partner with Riteish as a sidekick[obviously!]
Here comes another twist! Riteish has a past .His father was an honest person. But loaded hotelier and local mobster Nana Patekar was responsible for his downfall .So he wants to revenge with Nana!
Abhisekh initially refuses to be a part of all this revenge drama ..But everything is fair in love and friendship .Then starts a journey....What happens next?
Expect the unexpected....That's apt way to describe the event that follows!!
Critical analysis
In terms of a story, writer Raghvan deserves a minimal credit. The story is a direct rehash of the Super Hit zany Argentinean film Nine Queensand in many cases it is a scene-to-scene copy from the orignal including the set pieces, background and colour schemes.Take the scene in the very beginning when Boman Irani and Tinnu Anand are conned big time!
In terms of a screenplay Rohan Siippy has done a great job. The movie moves at a breakneck pace from the word go and doesn't give the viewer a chance to think. The films pace does drop in the second half and while the second half is less funnier with action taking the front seat..both halves are just as entertaining.
As a director Rohan Sippy is in complete form! The director earlier directed insipid and boring Kuch Naa Kahowith the same hero and the result was a disaster.But with Bluffmaster he doubles the entertainment factor and polishes up on his directing skills .
Given the cast, premise and Mumbaiya setting of the movie Rohan does a perfect job at balancing everything. The film is slick, stylish and extremely funny and Rohan magnificently handles the comic scenes as well as the action with equal flourish. But its the climax that comes as a bolt from the blue.
Likewise comic scenes in the first half between Ritesh and Abhisekh have been handled brilliantly and make for some of the best scenes in the movie. Director Rohan Sippy's ability comes to fore in sequence like-in the very beginning the enagagement sequence of Abhisekh and Priyanka ,the hospital portions involving Riteish ,Abhi and Boman ,the scene when Abhi and Ritesh are caught by the police,the credit card sequence are all delight!
However conning portions remind me of BNB and EKEH...
Also Rohan has not forced any unwanted songs or subplots into the films narrative-the film moves on a single track which is a relief.
Furthermore-what actually makes the film work is the blistering chemistry between the lead players-- Abhishek and Riteish.The comfort level they share with each other really rubs off well onscreen which enhances their performances.Another Jay-Veeru in the making?
The music in the movie is foot tapping and is in top form . The picturisations too are lavish and a treat for the viewers. Abhi's introductory number ''Sabse Bada Rupiyaa'' is superbly canned and sets the tone of the movie.
Dialogues are funny to the core.Especially those delivered by Boman and Riteish .For instance- 'Zukaam se leke AIDS tak I'll cure you of anything.''
Technically the movie is akin to any Hollywood film.Cinematography is stunning. The entire movie has a slick, gloss and bright look throughout.
Now to the performances !
The performances hold the entire movie together and the every member of the cast does a superb job..
But Blufmaster really belongs to Nana Patekar. He is a definite eye opener.The actor who is basking in the glory of critical acclaim for Apharan is in complete form!If one expected Nana to be sidelined they will be very surprised as he has plenty of scenes and whats more surprising is that Nana manages to raise some laughs in the movie and towers one and all .
He plays his character with absolute precision and his body language only adds to his performance .Just witness the scene where he prays himself in the mirror.......so funny! One can easily say that Bluffmaster is worth a watch for Nana's performance!
Abhishek yet again delivers a superb performance with an amazing ease. Without a doubt ABhishek is India's new Superstar and with Bluffmaster he proves it yet again!
His performance here isn't as intense as in SARKAR or stlylish as in DUS in my view-but nevertheless Abhishek plays a role that completely delivers to the gallery.
His flawless tune, fantatsic body language and perfect delivery make him a winner! .As a confused lover or conman-he is just perfect. Three cheers for AB ...Way to go!
Riteish Deshmukh is a real surprise!In first half ,his boy next door image looks help his character and Riteish is absolute natural when it comes to comedy(witness his introduction scene ). Just when you think that his role is that of routine comedian ,you are in for a surprise!To top it all ,his delivery has improved by bound and leaps!
Boman Irani is dependable as ever and the actor is a scene stealer yet again. Although the role isn't as meaty as say MUNNABHAI , Irani does manage to leave a mark .
Priyanka Chopra is no doubt the queen of Bollywood with hits like Barsaat,Aitraaz ,Mujhse Shaadi Karogi ,Waqt.In Bluffmaster, Priyanka delivers a extremely confident and likeable performance and is a complete natural.Another feather in Priyanka's cap!Look at her expression when she ditched Abhishek on their engagement day-so natural!
Conclusion
All up BLUFFMASTER it's not a classic by any means or even a great film..but the movie is great timepass entertainment for sure! So fasten your seat belts and get ready for a joy ride...
