Finally commercial Bollywood takes puts forth its gradual step towards churning out something sensible yet entertaining , logical yet magical , sombre yet triamphant. Don't believe me??? Go watch Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black...We are finally coming to a stage where there is no more the need to differentiate between Art and Commercial cinema.....a stage where arty films are no more depressing sagas of wierdo specimens in dark greesy rooms.....a stage where commercial cinema is moving away from the rich-poor-poor-rich love story meandering plots where the hero's sister gets raped invariably! And yes, finally we are being given a break from SOTC arranged tours to Switzerland and Prague where Govinda once romanced Karishma and Shahrukh once romanced Kajol!
This is an exciting stage for the script writters who are finally being given a chance to explore virgin corners or their majorly unused cerebrum! And films like Black and PAGE3 are examples of a new genre of 'Realistic' and not 'art' or 'commercial' cinema. Producers should understand that the audience of today, atleast the multiplex one looks for reality portraying day-to-day life. India leaves a majority of genres unexplored but that's understood because we neither have the budget-infrastracture nor the audience for it.
Anyway let all of us take a huge sigh of releif, atleast for the little but definate improvement that the Hindi films have shown in the past 2-3 yrs!! Coming t Black-
Black is the story of Michelle Mckelly(RANI MUKERJI) and her Teacher(AMITABH BACHCHAN). Michelle born into an anglo indian family is wild and reckless considering she is deaf and blind and thus has no sense of the world. Her family is helpess and anxious. Enter Amitabh her alchoholic , self indulgent teacher who transforms the child-devil into a self respecting graduate, a loving friend and a loyal student in a span of 25 odd years. Its a journey of their triamphs and their tribulations....
The screenplay of Black is its major plus. Sanjay leela Bhansali shows his versatility and his brilliant radiance as a director. His major achievement lies in literally scratching out the very best from all his actors. The film looks magnificant though one wonders at the authenticity of the sets. Since when did pre-partition India start looking like a quaint little english town??
There are some scenes in the film which are par excellence , for example
The letter Michelle writes to her sister at her engagement being read out by Amitabh
The scene where Rani tells Amitabh to kiss her on the lips just once so that she can feel complete. (this is the first and only time there was a necessicity of a kiss in a hindi film , though that does not mean I am opposed to the act....the more the better!..Haha!!)
Now for the best part...the performances-
Rani: Her best ever to date......Celina Jaitley should watch Black and then watch Janasheen.....maybe then she might agree to our pleas-STICK TO MODELLING!!
Amitabh: Undoubtedly his best too...a relief after those 'hainnks' in Baghban
Ayesha Kapoor: is a revelation
The manage to create ripples in the acting department too
Go for it!!
