Plot

Mohammed(Anurag Sinha) is a suicide bomber trained in Afghanistan to blast the Delhi Red fort on Indian Independence day. He is sent to India under a pseudonym, Numair. He resides with famous Professor of Urdu Language, Rajan mathur(Anil Kapoor). There are lots of idealistic differences between both of them. While Rajan is a Gandhian, Numair is a conservative Islamic Firebrand. But they still manage to be friends along with professor’s Social activist wife, Roma(Shefali Shah). During Numair’s stay with the Mathurs, he has to gain their trust so he can get an official entry to the Red Fort for the Independence Day morning and he can have the mission accomplished.

Critic’s Comments

When one hears of a Subhash Ghai movie, one often imagines, a grand star cast, songs and dances, larger than life story and a typical hindi commercial film. Thankfully, Subhash Ghai has spared us the trauma and put across an issue based film with no over dramatic scenes and no unwarranted songs and dance sequence. The cinematography by Somak Mukherjee is dark and perfectly suited for the film. The story, although lame at certain places(I mean why was that Punjabi Wedding type song required?) but good enough to hold the viewer’s interest. The acting by everyone is good. Anurag Sinha impresses one in his debut role and is supported well by Anil Kapoor. The rest of the star cast have pretty much nothing to do. Watch it if you want to see someone try something drastically different.

Psst –

1)       Aditi Sinha was chosen as the supporting actress in a National talent Hunt competion.

2)       Along with his earlier Ventures, Hero and Kisna, this is another movie which Subhash Ghai has claimed to be very close to his heart.

3)       The movie opened to as low as 20% opening in the first day. When I went for the first day first show of the movie, there were 17 people in a theatre meant for 220 people. This is amongst the worst ever opening for a Subhash Ghai movie which is usually booked for atleast a week in advance.

4)       When I asked Subhash Ghai, in an online chat session, whether the movie was inspired from the 1997 hit, The devil’s own, he was angry and told me to stop accusing him of plagiarism and watch the movie and judge. Well, I did see the movie and have concluded, that although this is not a remake of The Devil’s own, the concept is still the same. For those who are interested, in 2000, Raj Kanwar made a dud called Badal which was a remake of The Devil’s own.

Quotes

1) “Is libaas main aurat musalmaan nahi ho sakti. Isi mujhe dikhaya hai, kisi aur ko mat dikhana.”

Oops-

1)*When Anurag Sinha gets down at one of the Metro Stations for the first time, he is said to have got down at Chandni Chowk. The Chandni Chowk Station comes under the yellow line of the Delhi Metro while he got down at a Station which was of the Blue Line(The one towards Dwarka Sector 9).

2)In the scene where they show the starcast escaping from a bomb blast at Qutub Minar, they show them near the Qutub Minar in one scene and the subsequent Scene shows them near the India Gate. Both are nearly 12-15 Kms away.*
