Okay guys, every guy dreams of studying in a hot-shot college and living in mumbai and giving my aieee exams and getting into Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, patna campus or BIT-patna as they call it, my first reaction was, "patna?". But the birla tag, college glory and the prospect of a hostel life lured me out of mumbai and into patna. First I was a skeptic thinking that I had done some great mistake that will chain my soul to tortures straight from the very pits of hell.
But turned out, I was overreacting...duhh!. So patna is a quaint capital city which has a relatively bad name because of a very backward attitude when it comes to the general public. But once I entered the 23 acre campus I was overwelmed by the fact that there existed a progressive sub sect of the patnaites who were very approvable even by mumbai standards.
The buildings are huge by any standards, the library is 3 storeys and run by solar power, there are 2 hall sized computer labs which have 4 central AC units each. There are little architectural notes which set the buildings apart. And the two of the most appealing features was the quality of the labs and the huge airconditioned auditorium.
The hostels were nice as well as they were clean and even the mess was okay as i've seen most residential college mess's serve inedible moulds as food, this mess was working with a approvable pace though clearly not excellent in any respect.
The hostels are divided by the year for boys and there is one hostel for girls. For the first year there is double occupany and for the subsequent years the students are given individual rooms. The teachers are well qualified and as at par with the level expected by a national level college. The boy-girl interaction though is poor which has something to do with the management have poor sight of such interactions.
The canteen is not as stocked as it should be, but there are a few eating joints near the college. The examination system is very structured and organised but can get tricky because of its pseudo-complexity. The course work gets updated on frequent intervals so it is up to industry standards. The disciplined life allows the students to have a sense of security as well as making them feel as if they are under close scrutiny.
All in all, it is better than most engineering colleges in maharashtra except IIT, bombay and maybe NIT, nagpur but keeping in mind that the degree we get is that of the university BIT, mesra ..the main campus, which was ranked 13th all india and 2nd after BITS pilani in the private realm by OUTLOOK magazine. It is well worth the effort to travel all the way.
So if you think you can forsake the malls, the multiplexes and bowling alleys (all three of which patna lacks) for studies, a good reputation and added heritage of the alma mater, BIT Mesra 's patna campus may be the best option for you.
