Aamir Khan AND Shahrukh Khan couldn't help me decide so I decided to buy BIG TV. Whatever said and done, the credit of reduced mobile airtime rates goes to them! and I am hoping they will be the reason for 'realistic' offers in DTH space as well.
Choices:
TATA Sky (Recommended by 45% at Mouthshut)
Add to this goodies like MPEG 4 picture and an audio out (which I can straight away connect with my home theater!), the choice was easy..
Why a DTH serviceMy cable guy (No! not Jim Carey), was becoming very hard to 'maintain'. I did not get the opportunity to see CNBC TV18, NDTV Profit & UTVi since last 2 and a half months. The reception was poor and well If I cant see the channels mentioned above, my TV indeed looks like an idiot box and I wont be able to tolerate that (after all it remains the first investment from my hard earned money!)
*The process
*I visited the reliance webworld (At Chembur, adjacent to Ratan motors showroom), paid them INR 4990/- (For the max plan which allows me to get a set top box (STB) and all the channels for a year except colors (thank GOD for that!).
I got a STB at 10.30 AM (21.09.2008)
I called up the reliance help center at 10.45, and I was told to hold (that rhymed!) for approximately 7 minutes, after which a gentleman by the name Manish obliged and was brilliant in taking down the address.
At 15.45, I got a call from the installer confirming the address
At 16.00 the champion installers came to my place
By 16.40 I was jumping up and down since I could hear the crystal clear output from my home theater and see a picture quality which I haven't seen before!
*Sound and picture quality
*The sound and picture quality is superb. Much depends on the area where you live. I am getting signal strength of 97 out 100! Nothing more to add in here
*The remote
* Looks quite simple to me and is easy to operate. The installer was patient enough to explain me the same thing at least 3 times (because I ain't a sharp person like many others!). There is a liberal use of RED color on the remote and the remote bears the OLD logo of BIG.
*Verdict
*Its just 3 days and I chose to write the review because I saw majority of people having problems with the installation, leaving a bad taste in their mouth. I for once am very happy to have BIG TV!
Please dont buy BIG TV if you cannot hold on to the phone lines long!. The wait is truly worth it but I do know many people would have very important things to be taken care of rather than 'holding the line' (Internet surfing to name just one!)
*Some important tips
Even if you buy BIG TV and then during installation you see that the signals aren't good, you are entitled to get your money back...
The BIG TV logo appearing on the left side of your TV Screen isn't transparent and is quite irritating...but very soon it will be taken care of..so don't worry on that
No one knows the function of the USB port in the BIG TV STB, so we will have to wait for a formal announcement from reliance. Any other story which your installer gives is a lie
You can hear up to 10 radio channels but cannot hear BIG 92.7 FM!
The 10 english channels from BIG entertainment will start hopefully by next month so don't panic if you don't see them
Feel free to logon to https://bigtv.co.in because, for a change, the schemes of reliance are easily understandable!
It is the duty of the installer to explain the way the remote functions...so ask for it!
Lastly, these installers are rated based on the feedback you give (they have a short feedback form...be kind enough to fill it...it takes couple of minutes but can help them to get a small bonus that would be less than your total ticket cost of 4 movie tickets at multiplex (cost of drinks, fries and popKorn not included!)
I will use the diary post just in case I face any problem with BIG TV....as of now...it is 4.5 out of 5!
(Of course I can't give 5 out of 5...I am an ace reviewer you see!)
