BHOOT

Before beginning my review on BHOOT I would like to inform MS readers that its my practice to watch a movie during day time and write its review during late night hours. I had seen this movie on Saturday May 31, 2003, after having seen this movie I did not have the courage to sit late night on my PC so I was just looking out to squeeze out time from my day time schedule to write and post this review.

ISN'T THIS A GOOD EXCUSE

Cast:

Ajay Devgan as Vishal

Urmila Matondkar as Swati

Rekha as Sarita

Tanuja as Manjeet's mother

Nana Patekar as Inspector Liyaquat Qureshi

Seema Biswas as Bai (Servant)

Victor Banerjee as Psychiatrist

Barkha Madan as Manjeet (the ghost)

Vishal is in look out for a flat on rental basis. He moves around with the estate agent. After having a look at many flats he returns back to his vehicle dejected as he has not come across even a single flat of his liking. On returning back to his vehicle he notices a building and he is very much impressed by the outer look of the building. He enquires with the agent about availability of any flat in that building. Agent informs him that though there is a flat lying vacant on the 12th floor of the said building he has not shown it to him as the previous occupant of the flat has committed suicide by jumping out of the balcony.

Vishal shows his interest and sees the flat and is much impressed by the flat and decides to go ahead. He returns back to the flat with his wife Swati, without informing her about the suicide matter. Swati is also very much impressed and they shift in immediately.

On their shifting a bai (servant) comes and asks them if it would be okay if she works for them as she was working for the previous occupant also. Swati shows her willingness to employ her.

Till this point of the movie there is nothing to scare you. Its from this point that you may have to tie your seat belt as Ram Gopal Verma is here to scare you off with his BHOOT.

After having come to reside in the flat somehow Swati comes to know about the death of Manjit. On knowing Manjit's death Swati loses her sleep. She walks out of their bedroom and comes out and sits to watch television. While watching television she sees an image of a scary lady on the mirror fear grips her and she yells out for Vishaaaaaaaaaaaaal. From this point each and every noise increases the fear in the mind of Swati. Swati frequently sees the image of the scary lady and a small kid.

Once Swati returns back to the building and while trying to open the door of the lift she is informed by the watchman that the lift is not working. Swati climbs the twelve floor. On reaching her flat she is shocked to see the watchman following her and coming inside the flat. On enquiring with him she comes to know that he has come to hand over their rental bill to her. She shouts at watchman and warns him that in future he should never come inside their flat without their permission.

The fear of the ghost grips Swati and now she sees the ghost at each and every place may be at a theatre while watching Spiderman or at a crowded beach. She even starts walking in sleep.

All these days Vishal thinks that Swati is psychologically disturbed and he takes her to a doctor. Who directs Vishal to take Swati to a Psychiatrist (Victor Banerjee). The Psychiatrist himself is a sad person as his daughter is counting her days as she is in the final stage of cancer.

Once walking in her sleep Swati goes down by lift and comes back after some time. On seeing her coming back Vishal gets suspicious and rushes down only to find the watchman dead.

Here enters Inspector Qureshi, Liyaquat Qureshi who comes in to handle the murder case of the watchman he is puzzled to see manner in which the watchman has been murdered. He starts his enquiry and comes to Vishal and asks him to call his wife but Vishal refuses saying that she is not keeping well and is sleeping.

Psychiatrist comes to their residence to check the condition of Swati, but by now she is totally possessed by the ghost of Manjit and she starts behaving strangely and even speaks to the Psychiatrist in the voice of his daughter.

The Bai tells Vishal that Swati has been possessed by the Ghost of Manjit and no Psychiatrist can cure her. Only someone who can exorcize. They call in Sarita who is an exorcist. The exorcist comes to know that the ghost of Manjit has possessed Swati and it is the ghost in form of Swati who has murdered the watchman. The exorcist asks Vishal to call Manjit's mother. Vishal gets the address of Manjit's mother and meets her. On seeing her mother Swati (Manjit) starts weeping. Manjit's mother on the request of Swati requests Vishal to call in Sanjay.

On seeing Sanjay Swati (Manjit) gets wild and tells that she has not committed suicide but was pushed down by Sanjay as she did not agree to be a partner to his lust. After pushing her down Sanjay with the help of the Watchman kills Manjit's son. Now that she has killed the watchman she still has to take revenge on Sanjay.

On hearing Swati speaking in the voice of Manjit Sanjay rushes back to his vehicle only to see the vehicle moving on its own.

In the meanwhile Swati rushes down and grabs Sanjay. Inspector tries to confront Swati but is hit by the ghostly power of Swati. Only on intervention of exorcist who tells Manjit not to kill Sanjay as the blame will come on Swati who is totally innocent. does Manjit spare Sanjay and moves out from the body of Swati.

Does Sanjay escape from Manjit what punishment has the law given him should be seen on the screen.

As a Director Ram Gopal Verma has done full justice with Bhoot. He has kept the story moving in a fast pace and spared us by not including any song being sung either by the leading cast or by the ghost.

It was good on the part of Nitin Manmohan to produce such a short movie (2 Hrs) instead of scaring us any further.

Cinematography by Vishal Sinha is just superb

However the entire credit of scaring the viewers goes to the Music Directors Salim Sulaiman and Sound Designer Dwarak Warrier.

Performance-wise Urmila has given her career best performance as a ghost affected lady. Ajay, Seema Biswas, Nana Patekar and Victor Banerjee have done justice to the given role. The role of Rekha and Tanjua were so minuscule that nothing can be commented about them. Fardeen Khan has given an impressive performance in a extremely short role. Barkha Madan as Manjit the Bhoot has given an impressive performance without having to utter a single dialogue.

Drawbacks:

The sequence of the movement of lift is repeated more than required thereby losing its charm.

Goof-up:

The scene when Swati is informed by the watchman that the lift is not working and she has to climb up to her 12th floor. Ramuji do you think in such a big building with 12 floors and above only one lift will be available.Instead of having the dialogue ''Memsaab, Lift Bandh hain'' atleast you could have used the dialogue ''Memsaab, Power nahin hai isliye Lift Bandh hain''. Ramuji take care of such small things in future.

In a nutshell do not watch BHOOT if you are a person with a weak heart.

The basis for the rating given by me is out of the four stars given, two goes to Urmila Matondkar for her performance, two goes to Dwarak Warrier and Salim Sulaiman for their Sound designing and Music respectively and the fifth star goes to Ram Gopal Verma and his team for a good team work.
