Sometimes life springs surprises. Getting through an interview that you never thought you would be able to, passing an examination that you thought it’s just impossible, that pretty, cute colleague over the next few seats having some work that can be completed only with your help, Bangladesh and Ireland storming the cricket world cup, floating loan rates suddenly soar high. In April Bollywood too sprang one such surprise. The film industry which serves clichéd, copied, pirated, beaten to death formulaic movies with utmost regularity suddenly came up with this movie titled

“Bheja Fry”, which is very much unlike Bollywood style, surprisingly with absolutely no Bollywood add-ons. No creation of hype starting months ahead, no creation of unnecessary controversies, no stars, no voluptuous heroines, no skin show. Though the film makers did not intentionally make a movie that is not typically Bollywood, their humble attempt is refreshingly different from the current crap movies.

Story: Ranjeet Thadani, an influential person in the music industry, has this weird habit of inviting aspiring singers to his Friday night parties and making fun of them. His latest prey is Bharat Bhushan. Just before he arrives, Ranjeet breaks his back. To add to his woes his wife who is in a depression and who hates this habit of him, leaves him. Bharat Bhushan enters the scene and what follows is a laugh riot, you got watch and enjoy.

Performances: Being a fan of south movies, I watch very few Hindi movies and hardly know any of the actors in the movie. I have to literally search through the web to get their names. And our protagonist role of Bharat Bhushan is enacted by Vinay Pathak. He is simply outstanding. A Government Employee who thinks of himself as a singer, but actually is not, who cracks jokes that tickles no one except him. He is able to bring out the beauty of the character that was wonderfully written. The other two actors who have important roles to play, Rajat Kapoor and Milind Soman also did a neat job. Ranvir Shorey hammed a bit in his role of Cricket Crazy Income Tax Officer. Sarika comes on and off the screen when ever required and she looked quite older to Rajat Kapoor and Milind Soman, to be their wife and Girl Friend.

Technical: Story and Screen Play by Sagar Ballary and Arpita Chatterjee need special mention. So, I browsed through the net and got their names. As you might have known writing the screen play for a film that has such a thin story line, with very few characters and only one location that too a house is very difficult. Lot of care needs to be taken in order to make the film not appear to be a sitcom or a play. I remember one such film made in Telugu with two characters but not as interesting as this one, “Show” won the National Award for best screen play. So, Bheja Fry too stands a chance.

The movie must have been made on a shoe string budget and will definitely bring decent profits to the producers even if it runs well in the multiplexes it got released. Hats off to everyone in the movie who made sure that the audience are in splits all through the movie. When I am all praises, one of my friends corrected “This film is inspired by the French film Le Dîner de cons(The Idiots' Dinner - 1998)”. *Oops! *Really? Fine! It’s better to be inspired by this one than by the ones like “Basic Instinct”

Tail Piece: The movie is for 95 minutes and is supposedly not to have an interval. But our stupid money crazy Inox at Salt Lake, City Center had put one and started the movie right immediately even before every one came back with their popcorns and cokes. If you have a choice, watch it some where else than at Inox. However, make sure you watch it.
