I had been to Bharatpur in February this year which is a great time to visit the sanctuary. It is around this period that the Siberian come visiting and the sight is breathtaking. The place is a nature lovers delight - unending stretches of rivers, greenery, flora and fauna.
The best way to discover the place is to take a rickshaw which are in abundance near the gate of the santuary. The rickshaws are reasonable and the rickshaw-puller double up as guides. They are actually trained by the sanctuary keepers are pretty good at spotting the birds and animals. They were friendly and were quite amused by our typical city-like ’’oohs’’ and ’’aahs’’ whenever we spotted a new bird.
The place is very peaceful - far away from the madding crowd. Taking a walk around the streams can clear away one’s troubled mind.
We guides also told us about a place which had pythons roaming in the wild. This was about 2 kms away and had to be covered by foot. Well, it was worth the walk. Seeing a powerful, long python in the wild is somehow very different from seeing it in a zoo under lock and key.
The number and variety of birds were amazing. Bring your binoculors along - the rickshaws have just one binoc each. And a camera of course.
We had stayed in the RTDC, which is best avoided. The journey from Bharatpur to Delhi is beautiful too, with bright yellow mustard fields on both sides of the road.
