Being Cyrus

ANY MOVIE THAT GETS RELEASED MUST HAVE A MESSAGE OR ATLEAST SHOULD MAKE THE VIEWER THINK EVEN AFTER WALKING OUT OF THE THEATRES. FORTUNATELY THIS MOVIE SCORES ON BOTH COUNTS! KUDOS TO HOMI ON HIS HOMECOMING

First things first, Mr. Homi Adajania deserves a big round of applause for the wonderful 90 minutes of time I have spent watching this movie. If there was one movie after Rang De Basanti that has managed to keep the audience glued to their seats then this movie would be the next in line.

Homi who began his directorial career as a assistant director in the 1999 release Bhopal Express proves to be a fabulous first timer.

Cast- Naseeruddin Shah, Boman Irani, Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Simone Singh, Honey Chayya, Manoj Pahwa and Carol Gracias.

This happens to be Saif Ali Khan’s first English feature film and he has rendered a very heartening performance (if I was to put it lightly!).

Being Cyrus tells the viewer an enthralling tale of that features the Parsi society.

Homi Adajania has uniquely told a story that transcends across various levels of intellect in a viewer and an aptly deviates from not just being a dark comedy and has a blend of its own unique comedy. It is this mix and match that makes the movie watchable and keeps the viewer guessing……….

story in Brief

The flick revolves around a retired sculptor residing in Panchgani played by Naseeruddin shah who has a wife named Katy, played by none other than ageless sexy siren Dimple Kapadia. Cyrus who is the central character (played by Saif) enters their lives on the pretext of helping Naseer with his sculpting work. Naseer has an old aged father in Mumbai and is taken care by his brother (played by Boman Irani) and his wife played by Simone Singh.

On one hand Katy lusts for Cyrus while Cyrus has his own plans. If I were to talk about the performances then I would have to say that Dimple was a way too simple for this role and overdid most of the times. Naseeruddin does a cakewalk (am not surprised) and Boman Irani who plays his ever fighting younger brother compliment each other aptly. The most surprising comes from an unexpected end; Inspector Maninder played by Manoj Pahwa is praiseworthy and his one liners would not fail to make you chuckle. Saif plays his part to the T and Simone Singh and others are passable.

In such movies, the background score has to be effective and Salim-Suleimaan duo have done just that. Homi being a photographer himself has picturised the entire flick with a good combination of B&W and colorful scenes and seems to be at ease right from the word go.

OVERALL A WATCHABLE FLICK AND IS TARGETTED AT THE URBAN AUDIENCE

I GIVE THIS FLICK A ½ RATING

AND HOMI SURELY HAS RAISED YARDSTICKS WITH THIS FILM AND ONE WOULD HAVE A LOT OF EXPECTATIONS FROM HIS NEXT FILMS.

GOOD JOB!!!
