Most of the reviews on this movie say that it’s just another one of Hollywood’s commando movies, well I won”t disagree with them on that. But however, I still felt this was a great Hollywood movie.

Behind Enemy Lines

Staring: Gene Hackman, and Owen Wilson.

Fighter navigator Chris Burnett (Owen Wilson) wants out of the Navy. He is looking for something more than boring recon missions he’s been flying. He finds himself on a lone Christmas Day mission over war-torn Bosnia. But, when he talks his pilot Stackhouse into flying slightly off-course to check out an interesting target, the two get shot down!

When the plain is shot down by heat seeking missiles Chris and Stackhouse were able to eject from the plain. The two of them landed safely, but Stackhouse was hurt. His leg was injured in the ejection. The position they were at was to far into the valley that they were unable to radio help. So Stackhouse tells Chris to go up on top of the mountains and call for help. When Chris leaves Stackhouse is soon found by enemy military, and Chris watches from a distance. The military men question him first, and then they begin to leave, until one of the men stands Stackhouse up and then he shoots him in the head. Stackhouse told the enemy that he was the only pilot in the plain and they believed him. When he got shot Chris seen it and it shocked him and he made a sound and the enemy heard it, they knew now that there was one more man left to hunt down.

Chris outruns his enemy and radio’s for help. His commander is ready to pick him up and told him to make his way to a safe point and they would come for him. Chris started out on his mission to locate the safe place that was ready for him. During this time the commander was informed that they were unable to rescue Chris and they had to stand down. There was nothing he was able to do. The command came from a higher up man. Chris had no idea that once he was to get to this safe place that he would not be rescued.

Once there he radio’s to let them know he is now ready. His commander is upset and doesn’t want to let him die, but he tells him that he is unable to fly in there and rescue him that “now” he needed to go to another destination for pick up. This destination was going to be a long, long way off. Chris is upset and pleads for them to come get him now, but they refuse. The commander is very unhappy, but he had to listen to his top commander.

With the enemy hot on his tail, Chris heads out to find the new place. The enemy is tracking him down and they are almost upon him when he ends up falling down into a big dug out crave. The enemy reaches the point were Chris is at, but they are unable to find him. Here Chris was smart and he hide himself under all the dead men, women and children that were murdered from the same men that were after him. Once the men left he got back up and started on his way.

Chris has many more problems yet ahead of him, but he does get some help from a man driving in a truck. They stop and Chris jumps in the back. The men in the front were listening to Elvis Presley on their tape deck, and in the back of the truck was a young girl, and boy. The boy loved the English Rap Band “Ice Cube”, therefore they decided that they would help this American pilot out. This wasn’t such a good thing for those in the truck, unaware that just a few miles ahead they were all in for the battle of their lives.

When they got into the town they were going too there was enemy fire going on. They headed right into a trap and everyone in the truck was killed. The enemy went around and found the American Pilot and the ran a tape over the news that the American pilot was now killed. So the rescue mission was now called off since there was no one else to help out. Two Americans were killed in Bosnia and the Americans didn’t do anything to help them out, or did he die?

Conclusion

I’m going to stop my review right there because the rest is a secret! You will have to rent this movie to find out what happened to Chris Burnett and if the enemy was ever found guilty of the death of an American or not. The movie was awesome, and I loved the parts were they would show things happen in slow motion. This would give you more time to see the actual event then just seeing things blow up and not getting to see what really happened to the men. It’s a very sad movie too, I guess since we are at war right now in Afghanistan this movie really hit home for me. I haven’t seen “Black Hawk Down” yet, but I’m sure it has to be just as great as this if not better. The action is outstanding and once Chris is shot down the action just intensifies even more. Gene was fantastic in this movie he played a good- hearted Commander that didn’t want any of his men to die. Did Gene ever end up doing the right thing? If so what happened to him in the end? Will Chris live or did he die in that town like the enemy said?
