This is the remake of bengali movie named "Rajkahini" and I must say the bengali movie was far better than this hindi movie though in these two movies the plot is same and one can find every scene was copied from it which is fine because both is directed by our Srijit Mukherjee. But who has watched the Rajkahini they will definitely feel the difference. According to me our bengali actors performed much better than this film. It is quite obvious that the story is very heart touching and we will definitely feel bad for those characters in this film. The main character Begum Jaan is portrayed by Vidya Ballan, she maintained the true colour of this character but somehow I felt that she could have enhance her performance for this role. This is a feminist movie where you will find a group of women(prostitutes) fight for their own land against the system. The story starts during partition in 1947 where our country was divided by the british in two separate countries. I love some of the dialogues of this movie for example there is a scene where those women were celebrating 15th august but Begum Jaan said that there is no freedom for women it is only for men. She also said that in her brothel there is no division based on cast or religion everybody is equal and treated equally. This movie has some wow moments also where you will get some goosebumps. I have to talk about Chunkey Pandey's character which he played smoothly but I didn't like Naseeruddin Shah's performance here. The music of this film is not that great even you will not remember any of the songs after you come out of the theatre. This movie is below average not for its story but the way they projected it. There are other female actors but I do not find their performance very attractive even they failed to project the real essence of those characters. I can say this movie is not good enough for buying tickets. Somehow I could connect myself with this movie. Even the story was good enough to deliver a great movie but unfortunately it is not that kind of movie which you will enjoy with your friends or family. And this movie is not ideal for children because there are many adult scenes and the words which are used is not suitable for them so keep it in mind. My final verdict is you can avoid this movie and enjoy other alternatives.
