I have always been awed by Mr Amitabh Bachchan. The manner in which his crises-laden life suddenly took a turn a decade back is a lesson for all as to how we should never lose hope as our life can change for the better any moment. Talking about his movies, he has done almost every kind of role with utmost perfection. His style and personality is impeccable and hence has a wide fan base comprising of people from the age of 6 to 60 and even beyond. Many of his contemporaries have either retired or doing inconsequential roles. But Bachchan saab is the only one in his age who is still getting leading roles and directors offer him roles especially written for him. He’s truly the baap of all! And therefore, when the promos of Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap showed Big B in full form fighting baddies, dancing, wearing flamboyant costumes and romancing lovely ladies, expectations were bound to be skyhigh. And as expected, Amitabh Bachchan doesn’t disappoint and gives a solid performance. What disappoints is the direction and presence of unnecessary characters that prevents the film from becoming a classic. A golden chance missed!

The story of the movie: Viju (Amitabh Bachchan) is an ex-gangster who’s settled in Paris but comes back to Mumbai to do one last job – assassinate the ACP Karan Malhotra (Sonu Sood). Viju’s cool, stylish, loves wearing loud clothes and hates when people call him Bbuddah. Karan meanwhile loves Tanya (Sonal Chauhan) but she is not interested in him. Tanya and her friend Amrita (Charmme Kaur) on the other hand becomes close friends with Viju. This also results in a face-off between Viju and Karan. However, Viju also has a hidden agenda. To find out what is it, watch Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap!

Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap begins well. The entry of the 3 main characters – Kabir (Prakash Raj), Karan and finally Viju – is splendid. The film goes off track with the song Go Meera Go. Still, you won’t mind at this point as it was fun to see Big B grooving to his superhit songs. However, as the film progresses, too many characters are introduced which eventually don’t have any connection with the main story. This is especially regarding the track involving Kamini (Raveena Tandon). Still, the direction could have saved the day. Unfortunately, Puri Jagannadh’s direction is lackluster. The scenes start suddenly out of nowhere and end abruptly. Even the intermission point, which was supposed to give a shock, doesn’t impact much because of terrible execution.

However, things get a little better in the 2nd half. The Amitabh Bachchan-Hema Malini romantic track is likeable. And fortunately, the climax of the film is just terrific and that’s what saves the film besides Big B’s iconic performance.

The film was publicized with reports that Amitabh has donned the ‘electrifying’ Sara Zamana costume, Raveena’s item number and that Abhishek Bachchan too would be in the film in a special appearance. Sadly, all three are missing from the film.

As mentioned before, Amitabh Bachchan was simply outstanding. For a Big B fan, Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap is a treat as Big B does it all here that we have loved him doing-action, drama, dance, romance, comedy and delivering clapworthy dialogues. And yes, he rides expensive Harley Davidson with confidence too! It requires guts and tremendous energy to do such a role and make it look convincing at a ripe age of 69. Sure enough, Bachchan performs it with ease! Hats off Big B!

Sonu Sood as usual was too good. Hema Malini like everytime looks beautiful and yet again shares a brilliant chemistry with Bachchan. Prakash Raj repeats his wonderful Wanted act. He’l soon be seen in a similar terrific role in Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham! It was great to see Sonal Chauhan after a hiatus but sad to see her signing such half-baked roles. A great actor, she deserves better. Chubby Charmme Kaur also suffers from weak characterization but her immensely cute performance compensates for it! Rajeev Mehta (Sonal’s dad) had a weird role which he performed well. Rajeev Verma (Swami cum arms dealer) was damn funny! Shahwar Ali does a great job. Makrandh Deshpandey was his usual self. Vishwajeet Pradhan and Atul Parchure were okay. And lastly, Raveena Tandon looks awesome but gives the worst performance of her career! See it to believe it!

Vishal-Shekhar’s music is alright. The title song is also the theme of the film and suits the film well. Go Meera Go, an ode to Big B, is likeable while Haal-E-Dil is melodious. Chandigarh Di Star, Raveena’s track, as mentioned before, is missing from the film. Anup Ruben’s background score was slick.

Action (A Vijay) was one of the plus points of the film. So were the dialogues (Rishi, Vipu, Ajay, Inaamulhaq). The ‘BP Sugar’ dialogue is legendary! Great work!

Lastly, Puri Jagannadh came up with a great story but the incoherent script and direction spoilt the show. It reminded of Don No 1, The Great Robbery and all the other dubbed Southern films that I’ve come across on Hindi movie channels. I’ve nothing against these films and these have a huge fan base. But sadly, this extremely fast paced and incoherent style of filmmaking doesn’t appeal to me.

Some of the best scenes:

  1. Bomb explosions

  2. Karan and Viju’s entry

  3. Viju meets Amrita for the first time

  4. The Baingan ka bharta sequence

  5. The intermission point

  6. Viju reveals his story to Amrita

  7. The song Go Meera Go

  8. Viju meets Kabir

  9. The blood bank scene

  10. The pre-climax and climax

On the whole, Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap pays a fitting tribute to the biggest star of Bollywood. But as a movie, it’s not very appealing because of weak and unnecessary characters and bad execution. Bachchan saab’s performance, action scenes and a fantastic climax saves the day. However, a must watch for all die-hard Big B fans!
