The BBC is one of the legendary institutions of all time. The BBC’s tentacles span hundreds of years and although sometimes old fashioned they do their job and do it properly.

One of the BBC’s greatest assets is its World Service Radio channels. I remember very clearly during June 1980, we were in Liberia(West Arica). A military coup had just occurred and the city of Monrovia was under siege by armed gunmen. My family and I were stuck in our home and the telephones were dead. The only source to the outside world was the BBC’s World Service. Our radio was one practically 24 hours a day during that time. After several days we heard an announcement by the British High Commission informing us that there was an evacuation in progress and we should find some means to get ourselves to the American Embassy where we would be transported by a war ship to neighboring Sierra Leone. That one announcement was enough to make me a lifetime admirer and fan of the BBC.

Back to what this opinion is about. The BBC Online is extremely comprehensive and competes with other sites offering similar content. It was actually quite surprised at the quality of the content and was honestly not expecting that much.

The homepage is very simply and clearly laid out with the news section dominating the center of the page. The main links to the site run down the left hand side of the page. These are:

-News – Headlines, Reports etc

-Sport – Scores, Reports, Analysis etc

-Weather – Forecasts, features etc

-Arts – Interactive arts, reviews, poetry etc

-Education – For work, for school, for life etc

-Entertainment – Comedy, Soaps, Pop

-Films – Cinema releases, interviews, reviews

-Food – Recipes, tips, celebrity chefs etc

-Gardening- Advice, facts, step by step guides etc

-Health – Facts, advice etc

-History – Analysis, games, reconstructions etc

-Home – DIY Tips, makeovers etc

-Kids – Games, jokes, TV favourites etc

-Live Chat – Details of times that celebrity guests are on to take your questions etc

-Music – Classical, dance, experimental, jazz, reggae

-Nature – Webcams, features, debates etc

-Radio – BBC radio 1 to 5

-Religion – Daily news and the best of the BBC’s religious programmes etc

-Science – Space, technology, basics etc

-Teens – Agony, fashion, webshows etc

-What’s On – BBC TV and Radio listings, recommendations etc

-World Service – Live radio, world news, features etc

There are many areas covered (as you can see). Some of these are really quite interesting and do not feature on other sites. The content is also updated quite regularly especially the news and sport sections.

You can also select the “My BBC” link and create the homepage according to your own tastes and settings. Areas that can be adjusted to suit your needs are 1) The news that you want to see, 2) The weather forecasts that you want, 3) The sport headlines that you want. Several other options are also available.

They also have the “BBC Shop” where you can purchase a wide range of products such as Books, Magazines, Toys, Music and many many more. If you searching for a common product it would not be advisable purchasing through this site since the prices are high. However there are many unique products available and these might be of interest to you.

Overall a very impressive site and a really good effort by the BBC to keep up with the modernization bug affecting everyone today.

BBC Online is accessible at https://bbc.com. & https://bbc.co.uk
