I strongly advise every account holder with Barclays to check each and every transaction on their bank account statement with a fine tooth comb.


That is of course, assuming you get your statement on time - it is a minor miracle to even receive the statement by the 15th of the following month, sometimes it arrives at the end of the following month.


Unlike most established banks, Barclays does not provide easily discernible details of credits and debits in the account. So it makes it that much harder to cross check the entries.


In a recent instance where my debit card was used abroad at a hotel, Barclays had debited the same amount twice - for pre authorisation and for the actual transaction.


They repeated this mistake one more time and only after I pointed it out to them was the wrong debit reversed. Till today I have not been provided any debit advice details and it took quite some time to even figure out what the debits were for.


I also noticed a relatively small debit for some credit card transaction which I was sure I had not sanctioned. When I asked for details the bank suddenly reversed the amount.


Till today I have not been given any acceptable explanation.


I am convinced that some insiders in the bank were perpetrating a card fraud, they start like this with relatively small debits which may not be noticed as such by the account holder. After a while if the account holder has not noticed, they will most certainly move on to higher amounts.


The bank has not bothered to reply to my subsequent letters. Credit advices are given only after repeated reminders. I am already in the process of shifting my account elsewhere and will certainly take up this matter with the banking ombudsman.
