The perfect commuter on a small budget.

Having owned a 2004 karizma, petrol was something that mine and my brothers wallet was most associated with. Being in college and since I required to do more than 50+ km commute in a day to and fro, karizma was definitely not the bike for me and my brother in Bangalore traffic. We still tried to push the vehicle forward without minding the running cost.

Finally one fine day during a rain we met with a small accident. The vehicles involved were a brand new Maruthi wagen R and a now our pretty old karizma(year= 2009). Don’t exactly remember the dates but it was a day that he got his salary and had to shell out 3000k on the spot as he was not knowing the expense involved with repairing the back door of wagen R, we luckily somehow managed to settle it for 3000k. Damages with our bike was also very loud, karizma lost its complete front fairing, head light, console and a big dent in the petrol tank. the best thing was, me and my brother escaped without a scratch.

So the talks began to bring down the travelling expenses and the first thing that came to my mind was a Bajaj Discover 100dts-si which promised great mileage. We went forward and brought a new discover 100 dts-si. The first thing after taking delivery was me and my brother taking turns n testing the smoothness and ride ability of the bike.

The second thing was a full tank never knowing how much the vehicle would return(mileage) as the 1st service was to be done at 650km and the third thing was to go for a somewhat long ride in the range of 20km.

I should say that it is a very good motorcycle for the mileage it offered. The somewhat good torque available, the mock road grip that it offered since the wheel was very small. Now I don’t own this vehicle but I feel this vehicle is always worth a mention. I should say that I have once travelled more than 130km on reserve which I still feel is really a wonder comparing to the karizma that we owned.

I will point out some positive and negatives of the vehicle which I rode for a year or so before leaving my country.

Positives:-

  1. Perfectly made commuter vehicle I should say.

  2. The brakes are small but have a very good feedback, even after changing the brake shoes n crossing 20000km within a year it was always feeling perfect.

  3. Tires did not wear out before 22000km or so after which my older brother was using it so I dint know what happened and eventually at around 40000km something it was sold.

  4. DC electrical and maintenance free battery did wonders to the bike.

  5. Headlight had a flicker free bright illumination to it. It lighted up the complete road.

  6. The tail lights were LED n it looked wonderful when lit.

  7. The auto choke function was ok but the negative il mention when iam speaking about the negatives.

  8. The bike feels home at  50 to 60km/hr which is when you get good fuel efficiency and a planted feel from the tyres.

  9. The front and rear suspension are great and the rear suspension is gas charged(Bajajs nitrox suspensions)

  10. For two people it should be ok vehicle.

  11. The handlebar and seating positions are great for long travel.

  12. There is a switch in the handle bar for improving mileage. Which when ON restricts the throttle to half turn to increase the vehicle mileage.

Negatives:-

  1. The tyres were not that gripy, it mockingly felt very gripy but during a emergency braking the wheels always headed for a lock up. The rear wheels to be specific.

  2. Once past 60km/hr the vibrations kick in maybe its coz of the smaller engine.

  3. The auto choke was not functioning properly during mornings. When into a long ride after the engine gets heated up if we happen to stop and start our vehicle in signal(traffic), sometime the auto choke kicks in and the vehicles rpm rises above normal and ups the engine heat further more.

Conclusion:-

The vehicle is a good economy machine. Those looking for mileage, this is definitely the vehicle to choose. This vehicle has the smallest cubic capacity in the segment. Correct me if iam wrong coz its technically 94cc something when splendor is 98cc something and above. I maybe wrong in certain views pls forgive, this review is completely based on my riding experience and my knowledge. Thank you.
