Discover 125, a very average bike.

This is a review for Bajaj Discover 125 Disc. I have owned this vehicle for 2.5 years, driven for around 16k KM and it is not something I cheer about. The bike looks okay and its design is very ergonomic but the weight doesn't seem balanced to me.

Riding single is good but with a pillion, the weight distribution disturbs and it feels very heavy at the rear unlike any other bike I have ridden (Apache RTR 180, Star City, Splendor, CD-deluxe etc.). The handling gets very difficult with a pillion on the back.

The engine is quite good in terms of raw power and acceleration. No other 125 cc bike can provide the acceleration like this does but engine lacks refinement. It produces strong vibrations and sound even at normal speeds of 50-60 km/hr but I don't have a problem with that as long as it keeps providing power which its accustomed to.

I have been able to touch the 95 km/hr mark within a stretch of 700 meters so yeah, "eYh chalta nahi, daudta hai." Also the rear brake of this bike is one of the best in the segment although same cannot be said for the front disc brakes. The brake oil tends to disappear god knows where after every 3-4 months and this is a serious problem. I rely solely on the rear brakes now for stopping the bike.

Now the most important part, fuel economy. I expected it to be around 60-65 range considering the discover badge associated with it but I was so wrong. I drive it in Gandhinagar city where roads are like Mumbai-Pune express way with even less traffic and I have rarely been able to extract over 50 kms from a liter of petrol.

I tried every driving style: low revving, high revving, tried different gear changing scenarios but the highest I ever achieved was 55 Km/liter and that too only twice. Earlier I used to get around 40 km/l but when I changed the petrol pump, it increased to a consistent 50 km/l.

So guys, if you are consistently getting lower efficiency than expected, try changing the filling station. And try to fill a minimum fuel of Rs. 300, tank full if possible. When I used to fill in with Rs. 100 petrol, it gave about 47-48 km/l but when starting doing tank full it gave a little over 51-52 km/l.

Verdict: If you are looking for good fuel efficiency, this is not the one to go for. Consider Star City or Honda Shine but if you are looking for best power and acceleration within this budget, it will be an ideal choice.
