Mahesh here from Cuddalore,Tamilnadu, I bought my discover125cc after carefully researching on web and bike magazines. I did not want to buy the passion because even my elder brother has got one splendor (both splendor and passion are having same engine). It was unbelivable when I went to showroom (akash bajaj) with under 50,000 price in my mind for discover as it was launched to beat splendor. The onroad price with all accessories came close to Rs.58,000. Since I had decided to buy discover, I put extra money and bought it. At that time I had no doubt in my mind that this bike is better in all aspects than splendor. Ofcourse I loved the styling very much and still I love very much. The riding on highway is very smooth and suspensions are very good.
First thing I want to tell you all is don't buy discover and read my points below,
At 4,500 kms clutch cable broke in middle of road on my way to court hearing in Chennai early in the morning (4.30 am), I physically moved it myself for nearly three kms in highway, finally I left it at one tea stall and took a private bus to chennai. It was not the only time it gave me problem but two more times once in rain and once after 3rd service both these times it was not starting at all even after 100 kickings. I faced lot of difficulties on these three events. Also we should not use hose pipe water to clean it, it will not start after washing. But use bucket and mug method.
The warranty covers only engine and not other parts, other parts I replaced by paying money from my pocket. The headlight bulb,consoal bulb and rear bulbs also has been replaced more than 15 times totally, finally service people told me that it was due to bad rectifer in the electrical circuit, they replaced that one also.
Now one more important thing is the power of discover is not enough to carry 2 people properly, this will happen after some time only, but when bike was new it is very powerful and takes two people easily. Why is this problem?
The bike has gone 9,300 kms and the mileage is not satifactory, it is only 50 to 55 kmpl. The roads I use are not having heavy traffic and I use mostly highways and no-traffic roads. Actually my brother's splendor (it has covered 34,000 kms in last 4 years) is giving more than 60-65 kmpl. We are shortly shifting to our new house in Chennai and I have to see how much it will give in big city like chennai.
Apart from electrical problem, the gear changing is also problem, it also makes loud sound in 2 and 3 gear. This is happening after changing clutch cable.
One more bad point is disc brake, I have fallen down two times when applying brakes even on good roads. Now a days I am not using front brake at all. The bike will loose control like anything.
Servicing is very good in our town, but I'm fearing any problem will come all the time - so I give regularly for servicing.
Compared to my brother's splendor, it needs more maintainence cost. High pricing Rs58000 is not worth at all for this bike. splendor, passion,TVS victor and TVS glx bikes are much better in terms of return of investments. And now many good 125cc bikes are there, Suzuki Zeus 125cc and also Honda shine.
So no peace of mind if you buy discover, better go for new TVS star city which is having very good power and is very fast. It costs less than splendor, and styling is better than splendor. TVS is producing good bikes now a days because in my town there are lot of them (Star City and glx). But for longterm usage good mileage and rough usage, people should buy only splendor or passion. Quality wise if you see Bajaj is not good at all.
My request for apache users - I want to sell discover once I settle in chennai and buy honda unicorn, apache is my next choice, if somebody has completed 8/10,000 kms please advice me on apache. My aim is to have bike for minimum 5 years and should not give any unnecessary problems (i'm a normal rider not rash rider)
