Expectations:

Director Neeraj Pandey debuted with a relatively smaller film'A Wenesday' and astonished the cinema lovers by its outstanding theme, powerful performances and brilliant direction. With every passing year the movie kept growing on and on over its loved audience and has been remade in several regional languages along with an official Hollywood adaptation. Neeraj returned back after a gap of five years in the form of an another thriller'Special 26', which was another great piece of cinema in its own way.

Both the films established Neeraj as one of the promising and looked after director from our Hindi cinema. The cinema lovers loved the twist and hard hitting presentation in Neeraj's films and wanted to seem more films from this talented film director. Thus, right from the day of the making till the release of the first promo of his latest film'Baby', there was a huge amount of anticipation associated with it. Petty stuffs like Akshay Kumar's stern looks, terrorism based subject, new style of action scenes, intriguing poster and many more are rising the curiosity factor associated with the film. Thus, let's find out whether'Baby' will add as one more feather in Neeraj's cap or might be a victim of over expectation associated with the film.

Story:

'Baby' is the story of a secret service organized by the government of India to stop the terrorism and the activities associated with it. The agency is led by its chief Feroze Ali Khan(Danny Denzongpa) and most of its operations are led by Ajay Singh Rajput(Akshay Kumar). The secret service organization was formed on an experimental basis for a period of five years and in its fifth and most crucial year one of a terrorist Bilal Khan(Kay Kay Menon) escapes from the custody of police forces. Ajay starts hunting down Bilal and others, associated with him with the help of his colleagues(Rana Duggabati, Taapsee Pannu and Anupam Kher). What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

The story is daringly different and has some shades of Nikhil Advani's'D-Day'.'Baby' is a combo of realism and fantasy as the theme is realistic and the concept is like a dream come true. Right from the first introduction scene in the film the movie is like a non stop thriller with lots of happenings going around in the film. There are some fantastic scenes like Akshay chase scene in Istanbul followed by his interaction with Jameel Khan, Taapsee Pannu's fight with Sushant Singh, Akshay-Rana-Anupam in the Saudi mission followed by the finale act and many more. These scenes will keep your eyes glued to the silver screen without blinking for a single moment. The screenplay is so gripping that it enhances your curiosity level and raises the excitement to know more about the next happenings in the film. The movie gets bit mellowed down in the family part and needed trimming in the extended chase and dramatic scenes, due to which the intensity of the film gets diluted in a few places. The climax scene has some similarities with Ben Affleck's'Argo'. Dialogues are outstanding and few of Akshay's dialogues will be applauded. The camera work is of top notch and has been shot as per total international standards. The movie has been shot in some great locations of Istanbul, Nepal and Saudi Arabia. Editing should have been tighter and strict in some places.

Music & Direction:

Music is not required in such type of films and Neeraj respect the genre of this film by not adding unwanted songs in the film.'Main Tujhse Pyaar' is a sweet song and has been mildly placed in the film.'Beparwah' featuring Esha Gupta is used in the end credits. The background music is superb and does full justice to the feel of the film.

Director Neeraj Pandey comes up with an interesting thriller and does his part with total grace. He fails to get distracted at any given point and keeps going with the flow of the film. He treats the film as per international level and that too with total sensibility attached to it. The only problem is that everything in the film happens very easily and there is no hardship attached to the film. He fails to give the'lump in the throat' factor as he gave us in the climax of'A Wednesday' or the jump on your seat factor as he gave us in the climax of'Special 26'. But, nevertheless he manages to give us a great thriller with many good cinematic moments attached to it.

Performances:

Akshay Kumar looks superb and slips easily into his character. His body mannerisms, dialogue delivery and whole appearances enchances his character. Taapsee Pannu's fight scenes are outstanding. Danny Denzongpa, Kay Kay Menon, Jameel Khan and Anupam Kher despite of a small role are superb in their parts Rana Duggubati, Madhurima Tuli and Sushant Singh were wasted. Rasheed Naz is impressive.

Final Verdict: So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?

Dum? Well, 'Baby' is a well made and fantastically presented film, which will keep you engaged throughout the film. It might lack some main factors in comparison to his last two releases, but has its own merits to boast about. The movie should have been more hard hitting and bit trimmed down. Nevertheless, right from the first shot of the film till the finale portion, despite of a few flaws'Baby' is a neat thrillingly dazzling experience.
