My experience with BSNL is overall very good as a mobile provider over the last few years. It all began in Chennai when I went into their office to purchase a 7 year sim. The staff was very accommodating and especially nice. The sim was very inexpensive and requires absolutely no upkeep to retain its 7 year status.
This is especially beneficial for me as visit India regularly and can be out of the country for a year or more at a time. Lo & behold when I return I can begin to use the connection immediately after exiting the airport. No fees no maintenance. I'm sorry that this may not be offered at the time of reading.
I also hold a 3G sim that requires 6 month rental. In order to maintain the number friends make the half yearly payments in my absence. The disadvantage I have with the 3G is that our tower in the Jungle near Coimbatore is not yet upgraded to 3G.
BSNL works throughout the country in locations that NO OTHER company will function. Customer service is exceptional & easy to reach with no cost to the customer - not like some other providers.
I do regret that they do not have an ISD mobile calling scheme for lowering rates to USA & Europe etc.. They do lose some of my business as I will wait to make those calls over VoiP.
I do have the occasional mis-connected call & find myself requesting a refund if it is to the USA and even tho the nice operator offers me a refund I never have physically seen any of them come through.
Regardless, all in all, this is the best provider experience I have had over my many years of trying mobile providers in India. Sometimes calls may cost a bit more than the other providers but their excellent customer service and coverage throughout India is worth it. Be that said, with a 3G sim the cost is usually equal or even less for calls & texts throughout India.
