Somethings should be frozen in time and should be there forever! But sadly, B. Merwans decided to shut shop this year in the month of April and I went here at least two times, for the last time to savour the outstanding Irani breakfast and the old world charm attached to this place. With all people wanting to globalize and make their spaces attractive and modern, the end-result is a stark place, devoid of any emotions or charm.
It is the exact opposite here, at B. Merwans. The place has the oldest furniture, I think as old as the bakery itself, i.e some 100 years old, and is dimly lit. It is one huge cavernous room, with small tables placed here and there. Did you know, there is also a small room called the Ladies Room here? Me and my siblings decided to go to Merwans, at Grant Road one particular Feb morning at around 5 am, and the place was bustling with people! We got a place and sat down a little awkward, because it was our first time here and we felt a little out of place.
In front of me, there was a huge table with a mountain of bun breads that were being slathered with butter and jam. What is an Irani breakfast without the Irani chai? The chai came in small ceramic cups with drops of milk clinging to the end of the cup and falling into the saucer. Next we called for Bun Maska and Bun Maska and Jam. WOW! The first bite itself blew my mind! I have had Bun Maska before, yes, but not as delicious and freshly baked as this one!
We noticed people eating small round pattices and enquired about them with the server. He said they were Veg Pattice and he got us 3 hot pattices. I have no words to explain how delicious they were! They were just Zabardast! I eat at least 2-3 of those and then came the time to order the Star of Merwans! Freshly baked Mawa Cakes! How does one describe the taste of freshly baked mawa cakes? I am sure even Wordsworth would not be able to put it in words!:p Their Tutti-Frutti Cakes too are the best in Mumbai, sorry were the best in Mumbai.
We had a hearty breakfast and yeah, we also did have the Mawa Samosas and again, they were plain delicious, just melted in the mouth! We left the place, wishing Owner Uncle all the best for the future and bid a teary goodbye to the heritage called B. Merwans!:( We miss you loads B. Merwans!
