Hypodrama!

It is difficult to not enjoy a movie when the whole world has been going hyper in the past few weeks. James Cameron has been lauded for using up probably $400mn to impress the audiences with special effects that would make Jurassic Park or even 2012 seem pedestrian in comparison. Yes the effects are applause worthy. But when the effects start coming at you with a “look how superb I am “precursor you start just tiring of them.

There is an overwhelming spectacle riding on an extremely ordinary story peddled perhaps by many a sci fi film before. What is so new about modern day man transgressing the area of the primitives and destroying their long held beliefs all in quest for superiority or to seize something of value? Just transpose this simple story many centuries ahead in time and you have Avatar when mans reach has extended to other planets. The value they are seeking in this case appears to be a rock resting with the Navis who are a mutated human race living in peace and harmony with their surroundings in a planet many light years away from earth by the name of Pendora.

The aggressive human race in their never ending quest for energy land up on the planet with heavy duty armoury to vacate the population of Navis who essentially are primitive one with nature type of people about 12 feet and athletic like Spiderman.

There is a humanoid planted in their midst as Avatar to get them to be reasonable and vacate the area but suppose that the good should reign over evil. The avatar is accepted by the Navi race after a long drawn acceptance ritual, during the course of which the hero falls in love with trainer daughter of the chieftain.

I am aghast at the amount spent on special effects without a thought to create an excellent storyline. The script of the finale is handled ordinarily with a typical tacky caricature of a villain trying to destroy all that the Navis value.

Extremely overhyped with superbly extraordinary special effects Avatar is hardly an outstanding film from the stable of James Cameron. Titanic and Terminator series were far more gripping tales with complementary special effects. This one is boring and seems like a self indulgence.

If you have to watch the nearly 3 hour long film, do watch it only in 3 D if only to help you last out the long drawn tale.

I landed up judging it as a pure hyper drama that I found difficult to sit through.
