At First Sight, released in 1999 starring Mira Sorvino and Val Kilmer. Basically, film plot is quite complex. It`s about a working-class woman (an architect) falling in love with a man (a Massager) who was blind from childhood.
After falling in love, she encourages him to have his eyes operated to give him a chance to see. This is what happens, and he starts experiencing real life his eyes, learning how to read and write and getting a new job.
In the end, he starts loosing his eye-sight again, and everything gets back to normal. Good thing in the end is that the woman continues to love him even if (1) she knows he`s handicapped (love-marriage) and (2) he`s discouraged... Film is based on a real story in America.
Unfortunately, pictures for this 1999 Movie is VERY MEDIOCRE and SOFT-LIKE, to say the least. I even thought I was watching a movie from the early 90`s and still feel stunned to know that it was a 1999 movie. Screenplay, acting, music and cinematography, as well as the mood of the film are all M-E-D-I-O-C-R-E and really there is nothing much that can be done about it. In other words, AT FIRST SIGHT tends to be an impressive emotional film, but still does not manage to be one, anyway...
I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT FIRST SIGHT FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS;
Soft pictures, and unimpressive sound. (looks odd being considered as a 1999 movie)
Mediocre in every category... whether music, direction, script, dialogues, characters, cinematography and even the PROMOS- (aka. stills)
The couple in the film looks odd. They don`t look young and are rather mature; so, the film is not as suitable for young audiences even if it`s a PG movie and the movie features actors who are pretty average and not so-popular.
The film is not as good and the end is not as sad as AWAKENINGS (1990). Lacks interest, and film tends to be boringand looks too artificial. -even for a real story. Read my review on Awakenings which is a wiser choice to buy if you would like to buy a film based on realy and emotionally stable real experiences of life.
Story is quite predictable especially the end... as we all know that the actor will be blind again. (like a reharsh of the better AWAKENINGS, released earlier in the same the decade)
