I got an ASUS P835 after exchanging my HTC -TYTN-II. The HTC phone really was horrible. I was kinda happy with the decision to go for the Asus P835 but was it worth the price paid? Find out here.

The good things: The large crystal clear screen, the leather finish, slim and sexy looks. Thats all on the outside. Now lets what good inside. The phone is pretty fast - at 528MHz processor, 256 mb ROM+ 288 mb SDRAM(I never heard of a 288 mb RAM before, but this one has it), 4 GB internal storage memory, very easy to update the phone software, a decent battery life of approx 2 days(and nights if I may add)! And its a Windows Mobile - not really a thrilling factor, but decent enough.(Well, its Microsoft - thrills in the beginning, kills later!). The phone has a decent ear-piece sound quality. Service quality is excellent. In case of major problems or customer dis-satisfaction, the phone is replaced. No questions asked.

And yes, I used HTC also. ASUS is definitely better than HTC in terms of reliability, quality, finish, and is sturdier. The fone hangs up much less as compared to HTC. You cant avoid the hanging part - bcoz thats Microsoft! But the Asus hangs 10 times less than the number of times an HTC does.

Finally, Customer service is superb. If you visit their service center, you will be treated well - someone will ask you for coffee or water, the support personnel will be very polite, and if for any reason you feel the problem in your fone is not resolved, they will replace the phone - no questions asked.

The screen rotation function is a delight but not as good as apple's i-Fone.

The touch Keyboard can be used with the finger, but expect a lot of mistypings.

The BADDIES:

  1. The ASUS Touch keyboard -I wonder why Asus removed the default touch qwerty keypad and replaced it with one of their own. This keypad keeps missing out letters. and the worst part it - it comes with a default "tick tick" sound when u type. Try turning off this sound, and you will feel like throwing out the phone - it will miss a lot of alphabets you type. To make matters worse, there is no way to activate the Windows Mobile default keyboard. Another thing is - the ASUS keyboard doesnt have numbers and some commonly used symbols. To get these symbols / numbers, you have to go to the number and symbol selection - which means 3 additional taps just to get one symbol or number. OUCH!

  2. the T9 dictionary - Gee! This one sure sucks! It auto replaces and that is really an irritant. for instance if you type - "How's my lil daughter?" you will get "How's my LILY daughter?" ASUS, are you listening? This is text messaging, NOT Office 2007! Oh! and the worst part of the T9 dictionary is you have just one option and the longer one - for instance if you want "deprive" the option you will get when you type "depr" is NOT "deprive" but "deprivation". And the most irritating factor - you cant turn off the T9 by default. You will have to turn it off EACH time u open up messaging or any other application.

  3. Lock / unlock button - ASUS, what's wrong with you? You give a leather finish, a sexy look, but an on/off switch thats requirs 10 pounds per square millimeter of effort just to move?

  4. The in call function - ASUS, we dont just call our friends, and bosses. We also call the banks, which have an IVR to choose from. This is the REAL irritant - when u make a call, and the call is connected, the screen switches off. Now if u need to select an option from an IVR, u first have to unlock the phone(refer point 3 above for the 10 lb/sq mm of effort required to move this switch), and in some cases the lights wont switch on, so u have to spend another 10 lbs/sq mm of effort to lock it and another 10 lb/sq mm of effort to unlock so the screen lightens up, and then u have to select the "Keypad" option to type in ur IVR number choice. But alas - its already too late and the IVR tells you - "You have not entered any choice. Goodbye." My fone bill sure is Rs 100 higher because of this problem.

  5. The battery cover - Its sexy, metal, but loose. Each time you take the fone out of its case, the cover will open. Hello! Anyone at ASUS listening? I wanna see the fone, NOT THE BATTERY every time I take out my fone.

Overall, spending 27k on this fone may not be the best choice. It may be wiser to spend a few thousands and get the 8GB Apple i-phone. Choose wisely!
