I was looking out to buy a nexus 7 tablet especially the second generation release.It is not released in the indian markets but nevertheless it is available at online websites for about Rs.19000/-(The US dollar pricing is 229 which converts to around Rs.14500/- but in india duties are added up along with some premium).The old nexus 7 was priced at Rs.11999/- till recently and I was dillydallying as to whether I should pay the extra money and go for the latest one.Suddenly 3 days back I saw that the old nexus 7 had received a further price cut and was available at Rs.9999/-.
I immediately decided to go for it and the tablet was delivered in 24 hours by Flipkart.This is my first online buy and Flipkart's delivery time as well as the packing is impressive. The 7 inch tablet with a 720p display is very handy to hold and turns on with Google icon on display.It came along with Android 4.1.2 and It connected it with my WiFi and I signed in with my Google profile I have on my Samsung s2.
It immediately tried to download the apps I already have on S2 but somehow there was an error and the download failed probably because of my WiFi connection which frequently disconnects. I had to manually download the apps again from play store. Also the latest update to Android 4.3 was downloaded by the device itself (172 mb) and I was prompted to install the update which I did.
The device is powered by a quad core processor Tegra 3 by Nvidia along with a Geforce Gpu with 1 gb of ram.It plays games like Temple run 2, Subway surfer and Minion rush smoothly without any lag. It has 1.5 mp front cam only and there was no camera app preloaded with the device.I had to download the official camera app from Google play.
The pics are not bad.I even downloaded an app which records video too which is not bad. Anyway very few of us are going to use a tablet for taking pics. We can always do that with our mobile and transfer it the tablet. Connectivity with WiFi was very slow initially.I read on the net to try restarting the device especially since it had received the update to android 4.3.After restarting WiFi connection is faster and stable.
Browsing web pages on the web is much more comfortable than on a mobile because of the larger screen. Also the device is comfortable to hold in one hand an use while lying in bed which is my favorite posture. I opened Google play books and found that reading ebooks was easier because of the bigger and crisper display. The tablet comes with 16gb of which 13.36 gb is usable which is more than enough for the user. It does not have an external micro sd slot.
Files can be transferred by Bluetooth.It has wifi direct also but somehow it fails to connect to my Samsung s2. I installed an app called Superbeam on both devices to transfer files.It can transfer larger files when both devices are connected on the same WiFi connection but the transfer is quite slow. Takes 12 minutes to transfer a 100 mb file. The Tablet also has NFC and when I bumped my tablet with my son's S3 the display of the S3 was beamed on the nexus 7.
The display is slighty washed out say when compared to a samsung galaxy s mobile or an ipad but it is stiil a good display that too with corning scratch resistant glass. All in all the tablet is a great value buy and other budget tablet makers cannot offer such quality hardware as well as software at this price.It is made in china alright but even the IPad 4 is made china.As they say you can buy this with your eyes closed by ordering it online.
