A book that is definitely worth reading.
The story revolves around Charlie Trumper. Archer depicts beautifully his life, right from his humble beginnings as a vegetable shop owner in WhiteChappel to his meteoric rise to being Sir Charles, owner of one of the biggest supermarkets, The Trumpers at Chelsea Terrace. The story spans over the two great wars and Trumpers involvement in each, in drastically different ways has been depicted effectively.
The grit and determination of Trumper, his relationship with his family and friends and particularly this tussle with the Trenthams are the highlights of the book.
Archer presents the narration from the point of view of each of his characters thus lending a new perspective to the story with each passing chapter. No character appears to be wasted, with each one given their due importance.
The book is lengthy, both in its content as well as in the time period over which the story is narrated but nowhere is one left disinterested.
This book is surely worth your time and money. Do read it.
