Mahesh Bhatt's Arth is an example of a masterpiece and some of the best performances the Indian film industry has witnessed.
The film is about a house-wife, Pooja (Shabana Azmi) who is cheated on by her husband, Inder. The woman with whom he is having an extra-mariatal affair is Kavita (Smita Patil), a schizophrenic woman.
The message of the film is brilliant, A woman has to be independent. The variety of emotions portrayed in the film are so diverse that the film leaves you mesmerised. The ghazals by Jagjit Singh are simply first rate. The only fault is that in the beggining, the film has a slow pace.
The biggest highlights of the film are however, the performances. Shabana Azmi is simly outsanding. Her expressions in the film speak a thousand words. This definetly one of her best performances. Smita Patil is first-rate. The actress is nothing short of brilliant. Kulbushan Kharbanda is very effective. Rohini Hattangadi is excellent in a short role.On the whole, Arth is a sincere effort and is a wonderful film.
