Crappy cheap chinese plastik. Review on Apple iPod

I checked out the iPod yesterday.

Didnt buy it, because first of all apple seems to be living in the 80’s.

By making the ipod they’ve continued doing the same dumb things

as before. Its a proprietary device, using software that runs only Mac related stuff. So you have to be stuck with the device and not have other choices.

Thats the good part.

The device I saw was some cheap looking shiny white box. The back part was a chrome finished plate which was full of scratches already.

Dumb idea 1 :

The start/switch on button was nowhere to be found. I noticed three buttons which I tapped and examined awhile and it accidentally sprang to life. Why not a simple on /off spring loaded switch ?

Dumb idea 2

For volume controls there is a disc with a something like a Cadbury’s gems button in the middle. Apparenly you slide your finger around clockwise to increase volume and the other way for reducing it. Basically a worse physical interpretation of the Quiktime volume control.

To operate the menu’s on the LCD screen you use 3 touch sensitive buttons. You have to be careful as the thing is obviously designed for Xbox and playstation fans and is super sensitive. The menu’s keep zooming all over the place until you get the hang of it. Hell I cant use it anywhere except when i’m alone and concentrating.

Dumb idea 4

Chrome backside. The shiny surface gets scratched. You need to keep it on Satin or some such to preserve the chrome.

The physical device and the buttons itself felt cheap and had made in China written all over it. The accessories and speakers and the stand for the ipod were equally cheap looking.

Earbuds were no different from the ones Sony made 20 years ago. They still hurt your ears after a while.

And apple want $400 (Rs. 20k at Forum, Bangalore) for it.

Only rich dumb kids would buy this device. Luckily for Apple and Steve Jobs there are plenty of them.

A better alternative would be the Creative Zen device. Costs about the same but is windows compatible.
