I bought this gadget as I wanted to graduate from songs to videos. I had an iPod Shuffle mp3 player earlier. It doesn't come cheap as for Rs. 8000/- you can even buy a good camera. However the shocker is that you do not get any software CD with the pack worth Rs. 8000. You have to dowload an 80GB installation file from itunes website. Further you can load or manage songs & videos onto the device only thru itunes application installed on your computer.
There is no provision to create folders of your choice for categorization of videos/songs in the Ipod. If you are out of place you will not be able manage the Ipod on somebody else's computer which does not have itunes installed. Apple also does not allow, the transfer of files from Ipod back on to your computer which means you will have to keep an equal amount of free space for your iPod data.
What is worse is that you are forced to install Apple Quicktime application along with itunes for it to function which occupies a lot of space on your hard disk plus loads many programs such as ipod service, apple software updater in the computer start-up list making the boot process slower.
Ipod nano plays only mp4 videos while most good quality videos are available on internet in avi & mkv formats only. However the quality of playback is excellent and so is the stainless steel finish. The device looks very rugged but for servicing only one location in Bangalore is authorised, so you may have to throw it away, if the IPod unfortunately malfunctions.
Now compare the same with a chinese version available in the market for 1500-2000 Rs. The chinese device works like a USB and you have the freedom to create folders without any driver or application. There is a speakerphone, a camera and a FM radio on the device. The device playbacks mp4, avi, mpg, wmv video formats. I was unable to find out any major difference in the performance quality of playback. Only thing was that the body was made of plastic instead of steel. It certainly appeared more user friendly than Ipod. Looking at the price difference, I cursed myself for having opted for an Ipod Nano.
