Before I answer the three questions that I use to write my reviews, let me say that Apne is a film that should be shared with the family. It is more than laughing together, crying together, and experiencing life with each other. Apne reminds us why we love our family so much. It reminds us that sacrifice is the biggest key in our relationship with our family members.
Why did you watch this movie?
I watched this movie because I have always wanted to see Dharmendra act with his two sons. And, when my wish came true I just had to go see the film. I also saw it for the classic actor Dharmendra.
PLOT
To make the plot of this movie simple- it is about Baldev Singh Choudhary who had won a silver medal in the Olympics for the category of boxing. However, he wanted more than that. Unfortunately, he had been accused for doping and was banned from boxing professionally for 15 years. He then trained his son Angad(Sunny Deol) to make him a Heavy-weight Champion. But Angad believed that to raise and support a family boxing will not do. Karan(Bobby Deol) who had an unfortunate accident becomes a miracle boy when his father's dream of training a total stranger to be the first Indian to win the Heavy-weight championship. In general, this film is a reminder that no matter how distant our loved ones seem, love is still present and they are there in times of need.
CAST
Dharmendra as Baldev- **It has definately been many years since we have seen a legend. Dharmendra played a father with hatred and love at the same time well. His hatred was for the incident that made him weak years ago. His love was for his loved ones. Dharmendra's acting was wonderful as usual.
Sunny as Angad-In my opinion, sunny has always been underrated or not appreciated for his acting as he should be. This film was definately Sunny's film. He performed very well and I'm sure he made his pappa happy.
Bobby as Karan- Bobby is also underrated. His acting skills are also very exceptional. In Apne, he proves that he is a good actor and part of the Deol dynasty.
Kirron Kher- She played Baldev's wife. Her performance as usual was very natural and beautiful. She plays her mother roles in different style and in Apne, she is heartwarming and supportive just like a mother and a wife.
Katrina Kaif- She plays Karan's girlfriend and a doctor. Overall, her role as the doctor was the more interesting side. To see her as a doctor rather than the girlfriend made her role a bit more meaningful although she had a small part.
Shilpa Shetty- She looked beautiful and did a fair job playing a wife to Angad. However her role was small and not very important.
Overall, the chemistry between the real life father and sons was the best. That was the highlight of the film and it will always be remembered for that chemistry. Today, bollywood is trying to turn away from the old romance type of films. Today, bollywood is trying to be more modern and different at the same time. If you want to see a film that is revolved around a unique theme(boxing) and still delivers good performance and a good message, Apne is the one.
Was the movie able to keep you glued to the screen?
Honestly, the first half was sort of a drag. However, once the actual boxing came into the script, the movie started to move on and got more interesting.
If I loved this movie it is for the following reasons:
Bobby-Sunny-Dharmji
The return of Dharmendra
Theme: family based and pride for the country and in oneself
