Shankar is finally back to his best after experimenting with the debauchery filled Boys. Anniyan is back to basics - An honest individual taking on the corrupt elements of the society. Shankar's earlier movies Gentleman, Indian and Mudhalvan are all based on the administrative flaws in the society. But, Anniyan is more rich, bright and brilliant. Shankar has got it all right to get the people flock to cinema halls after his last goof up.

Anniyan is a simple story of a simple individual, Rules Ramanujam(as he always follows the rule book for the minutest of matter). He is a lawyer from a basic middle class Iyengar background. He is frustrated with the society as nobody adheres even to the simplest of rules. He logs in all his frustrations in a website, and by the end of the day, Anniyan wipes out all those individuals who are deviating from the path of righteousness. While Ramanujam is an incapable individual not able to do anything on his own, Anniyan is a more aggressive persona of this frail individual, taking the law into his own hands and eliminating the bad elements from the society. Ramanujam falls in love with a girl in his agraharam, Nandini. Ramanujam proclaims his love for her in typical conservative style. Nandini rejects his proposal as she finds him too boring and out of place with the society. Ramanujam loses his mind on this and trys to be more charismatic as Remo. Now, this is all getting too confusing, isn't it!!!. It is all about MPD or Multiple Personality Disorder. When an individual realises he is incapable of doing anything, his energy reserves build up to an all time high, and achieves whatever he wants to by donning the role of another personality. This is what Ramanujam has been doing, as in Remo and as in Anniyan. This is what Anniyan is all about.

The cinematography and the picturisation of the movie to put it in a single word is Outstanding. It is a visual treat for the viewer in every song. The Kumari song has superb picturisation. It is shot in the Tulip Gardens in Amsterdam. The stylish floral pattern, along with the beautiful colours and superb background settings makes it a wonderful sight for anybody. The Iyengar Veetu Azhage song is shot using another grandeous set filled with artistic and authentic background. The Thiyagarajar Aaradhanai cannot be taken in a more authentic way. It simply evokes the memories of Thiyagarajar songs at Thiruvaiyur. The Remo and Nokio songs are shot in exotic locales, amidst huge buildings of fantastic dimensions. Sabu Cyril has come up with stunning art direction. Harris Jeyaraj has come up with very good background score and songs that are nicely tuned. The technical team should get all the credits for this movie. There is a scene where Anniyan takes on single handedly, the entire Karate group of around 200 people. The fight sequence here is brilliant, with superb use of cameras in diverse angles. Vikram's acting as Ramanujam, Remo or Anniyan is nicely performed. Vikram has come up trumps as far as this movie is concerned. After a forgettable 2004, Anniyan will really boost his name in Tamil cinema. Sada, as Nandini is beautiful in the conventional saree as well as the modern outfit. A word of comment is a must for the supporting actors in Vivek, Prakash Raj and Rajam of Metti oli.

This hyped up movie will certainly live upto its hype and expectations. When you see this movie, one gets to realise how difficult is is to etch all the scenes to perfection. One has to get the sequence right without boring the audience and Shankar has carefully planned it to perfection. A late night show on the first day was worth it, what with me and my friend procuring the tickets in black.

This movie should definitely not be watched in Thiruttu vcd as the the quality of visuals would be diminished in the small screen. This movie, though has a similar storyline to his other movies, should be watched mainly for the technical highlights which looms large in this exquisitely directed movie. Shankar has got a winner in his hands.
