There are some movies for which you actually feel bad if the final outcome is not as interesting as you would have expected after the first half. Ankahee is one of them. Though the movie begins well, a series of absurd incidents over the course of time make one loose interest in the proceedings and hence dampen the effect of some fine work done in the initial reels.

It tells the story of a broken relationship and appeals to a degree. Not in totality…

Esha plays Kavya, a Miss World and the seductress, who falls in love with the doctor Shekhar (Aftab Shivdasani), .

The fact that the doctor happens to be married with a daughter does not deter the powerful and successful, yet lonely, Kavya who believes that only he can make her happy.

Shekher's life undergoes a dramatic change after Kavya's arrival. His beloved wife and his work make way for his love. Nothing was more important than Kavya and his need to be with her. Not even his lovely little daughter.

Nandita is stuck in the middle. Shekhar, her husband is the only man she loves. She can't think of parting with him but…

The uppers –

The dramatic sequences between Esha and Aftab are the best part of the enterprise. The sequences when Amisha confronts Aftab and spit venom keeps the viewer's interest alive. The confrontations are not just well penned, but equally well emoted.

The performances are of a high order. Actually, the film rests on three shoulders – Aftab ,Amisha and Esha.

But the film is not without its share of downers –

The biggest flaw of the film is that the script is a hotpotch of scenes inspired from various films. To start with, the script is as old as the hills. It is anything but novel for the Indian audiences, who have witnessed the obsessive love triangle bit umpteen times in the past. Unfortunately, even the screenplay relies too heavily on the punches that have been witnessed earlier, as a result that the story gets cumbersome after a point. There's not one scene that actually remains with the viewer after the show has ended.

Even otherwise, the director has taken a lot of cinematic liberties. For examle, the reasons for Esha wanting to commit suicide are not established well. The romance between her and Aftab is least convincing.

The screenplay could've been more cohesive. The film tends to drag at places, it even tends to get boring after a point.

Music is plain mediocre. Let's put it this way – knowing the talent Pritam possesses and the output he is capable of delivering, the music looks out of sync. Although a couple of songs are tuneful, a few of them have been injected in the screenplay without any valid reason whatsoever.

But the biggest drawback is its climax. The culmination to the story and the note on which the film ends mars the impact of the film completely.

Director Vikram Bhatt has handled several individualistic sequences with flourish , but is letdown by his own script. Now, this is all the more surprising since the he had a hit like ''Fatal Attraction'' to fall back upon if at all he needed reference points! Also, he has treated the subject in such a manner that it will find flavour with a select few only.

Cinematography is okay. Dialogues are realistic.

Performances by the cast were all first rate. Aftab does a great job in the film. He has a confident screen presence, and he is overcoming is anglicized accent well. His emotional scenes still need a little work, but otherwise he is very good here.

Amisha also does a competent job. Hers isn´t a complex character but she is very insecure, yet understanding. Amisha does a great job in bringing her emotional issues across well on screen and makes Nandita an extremely convincing character.

The star of the show is Esha Deol who is simply mind blowing in this film. Her performance is sure to get her noticed, finally! This actress has never gotten her due in the past, well in this film she overshadows everyone and everything. Not only does she look amazing, but she acts so well it will leave you speechless. If you hate everything else in the film, her performance will surely win you over

Ankahee lacks the power to captivate, mesmerise and enthral the viewer, courtesy a weak script.
