“Angel Eyes” – R – New This Week to Video/DVD Is there a reason for meeting each person that we come across in our lives? Sharon (Jennifer Lopez) is a Chicago Police officer with a chip on her shoulder. She tends to get overly tough with the criminals. One day, while she is on a foot chase, following after a street thug, something goes wrong. The criminal gets a hold of a gun and is about to shoot Sharon when a mysterious stranger, Catch (James Caviezel) saves her. She meets Catch for a drink so she can thank him and is intrigued by him and his warm smile. Catch is helping Sharon deal with her family problems and things are going along great. But Catch won’t fill her in on his life. She does her own digging and realizes that they have met before. Can they help each other overcome the difficulties in their past?

Gerald Di Pego wrote the screenplay for “Angel Eyes” and Luis Mandoki directed it. My first problem with the movie happened at the beginning of the film. I thought the character of Catch was supposed to be mentally challenged. He appeared to be that way and then slowly came out of it. I found out later it was supposed to be depression, but that isn’t the initial feeling I got.

My second problem with it was that it was in the genre of thriller/mystery/suspense. It was none of those things. Sure it was a drama, but nothing more than that. During the duration of the movie I was waiting for one of the characters, if not more, to become bad. That never happened. It you are expecting a thriller with loads of suspense, don’t watch this one. It was a drama with a lot of romance and family tiffs. On the other hand, it was a great movie.

J-LO really proved herself as a dramatical actress. Granted she has had other fantastic roles, such as Selena, but this movie she made me laugh and cry and her character really came alive. James Caviezel is such an excellent actor. Aside from thinking he was mentally challenged in the beginning of the movie, he tore apart my heart as I watched him. He has had very small roles in movies up until his starring role opposite Dennis Quiad in 2000’s Frequency. Once given that lead role he ran off with it. He has since been in 5 more films with lead or co-star roles. His next project due out in February 2002 is The Count of Monte Cristo. This epic tale will certainly put Caviezel on the Hollywood Map! Needless to say, I would indeed recommend this movie. Just be prepared that it is NOT a thriller or a suspenseful movie.
