I strongly disagree with the idea of type-cast. Having seen all your hindi movies till date I have no hesitation to declare you are the best. Some might say that your gal next door look is fine and you should continue to do so. But my opinion is look for challenging roles. Although challenging roles might prove fatal sometimes (Rani Mukherjee in "BLACK") but that can not be a prohibiting factor.
I am not sure why Indian directors can not find out plots like "Harry met Sally", "You hv got a mail" for the audience...why they almost always depend on ghisha pita or stolen plots.
Amrita, You are our Meg Ryan, you are our julia roberts stay as it is. To survive in the Hindi Film industry u might have to do odd or uncomfortable roles but be bit choosy. You are an adult and you are the best judge of your roles.
Personally I did not find anything wrong with your role in Short-cut...chalta hai. Especially when the movie has got a message. Stay tuned, I producer or director will come to you with a role more fascinating than "Roman Holiday" or "Notting Hill"
Lots of luv,
