American Express sent me an INVITATION to have their card. Though I have been having credit cards for years, I thought that the AMEX card would be prestigious. How foolish! I filled up the form, called up one of their DSA's. He took the form, took the supporting documents etc., A couple of days later, my wife calls up from home and says that some shabby looking guy has knocked at the doors and wants to know about my house, my job and sundry personal details. The guy was looking like a goon and was very impolite to the point of being rude.
I told my wife to put the guy on line and asked what the matter was. The guy said that he was a ''verification'' agent of AMEX and was checking up on me!! I told him that he should have had the decency to call in advance and he should have met me in the office. The guy said that their job is to make ''surprise'' checks. I told him to get lost. My wife panicked because she thought that I owed some money on the credit card and that the goon was here to collect!!
I sent off a stinker to AMEX, to which they have not bothered to reply!!
I fail to understand. On the one hand they sent me an ''invitation''. It would be logical to presume that they had sent mailers to individuals of decent standing (Incidentally I was then the CEO of a medium sized company) and that their verification would apply only to those guys who applied for a card. In this case, they violated all norms of decency.
If they send goons to your home before you apply for a card, can you imagine what would happen once you are unfortunate enough to have their card? God help you.
I have been having a Diners since 1987 and have nothing but praise for the way in which they deal with clients.
STAY AWAY FROM AMEX.
