Story:

The trilogy of Dark Matter consists of The Golden Compass(also published as Northern light in some regions), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. The first book is getting made into a movie with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman as the lead actors. The director is Anand Tucker(British Indian). The series is the story of a young girl who lives in a different world and travels from Oxford(in her world) to the North Pole and then to different parallel worlds and finally to the heaven and hell.

During this journey, the author takes us through a kaleidoscope of characters including Gypsies, Armoured Bears who fight, the strange creatures in the different worlds. But the base story revolves around the premise that God is the first angel and he is ruling the world using his cronies(sic). The church and similar people are in cohorts with this. The story ends with the destruction of the God and his fighters. A lot of people may find this pretty blasphemous.  But, it’s a story well imagined. The characterization is very sharp.

The most interesting part about the story is the sense of reading a cross between the Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Ring series. I would not blame if somebody feels that Pullman would have been inspired by these. But, the truth is the dark material series started coming out in 1995.

The language is very fluid and you will not feel like putting it down. The characters, especially the central characters of the mother and father of Lyra(who is the girl) change their shades from white to grey to black through the series.

The last book is the darkest of the lot. And for a lot of people it would be a hard to digest story. The part 1, starts where Lyra is in the Oxford college. She starts a journey to North pole to help her uncle Asriel who is on a trip to North and got captured. During this journey she comes across a host of characters including the Gypsies, who help her. The evil & Beautiful lady who tries to separate the conscience from the body(the people in their world has conscience separate from the body and takes an animal form which always will be with the owner). There are Armoured bears and Witches who can see the future.

The second part is her travel to the parallel world where she is in quest for the source of the “dust”, an elusive material. Here she comes to our world and gets a new friend.

The last part is where the final war between the humans and angels happen. The God himself is a part of this war.(hmmm).
